MTB index page for all MTB content NORBA series #6 - NEBrian Head, Utah, USA, August 6-7, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Race Race 6 - August 7: Short TrackKabush, Hanusova extend short track leads with winsBy Andy Lee, USACycling.org Round six of the 2005 Shimano NORBA National Mountain Bike Series concluded on Sunday as Geoff Kabush (Maxxis) extended his lead in the overall series standings with a win in the pro men's short track race and Katerina Hanusova (Team Luna) outsprinted teammate Shonny Vanlandingham in the pro women's race. After losing his series lead in the cross country standings to Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (Subaru-Gary Fisher) on Saturday, Kabush redeemed himself a day later and chased down Adam Craig (Giant) late in the 20-minute timed event at an altitude of 9,600ft and soloed across the line with an emphatic victory after a bout of bad luck derailed him on Saturday. Kabush now holds a 954-858 lead over Todd Wells (GT/Hyundai) in the overall standings with just two events remaining. In Sunday's race, Craig made the first move, attacking a timid field about midway through the race and eventually opening up a significant advantage. Behind, Kabush, Horgan-Kobelski and Wells kept the gap at a manageable distance before Kabush finally tacked on to Craig and left the other two chasers behind. Suffering from the altitude and solo effort, Craig was outmatched against Kabush, who knew that controlling his efforts was the key to the race. "I felt pretty confident and watched the women's race and it looked like proper pacing was really paying off," explained Kabush after his fourth NORBA national short track victory this season, "so I was just trying to control myself in the first half and not punch it too hard." The women's event featured the powerful one-two punch of Luna teammates Hanusova and Vanlandingham as the duo finished first and second respectively ahead of a numerically disadvantaged Dara Marks-Marino (Ford/Specialized). About halfway through the race, after the blistering pace characteristic of a short track event and the high altitude took its toll on the field, Vanlandingham made the first serious attack to which only Saturday's cross country winner, Heather Irmiger (Tokyo Joes/Go Lite), Hanusova and Marks-Marino could respond. Irmiger was the first to fall off the pace as the other three motored away creating the final selection. Once the trio was clear, team tactics came into play as Vanlandingham and Hanusova clearly had the upper hand on Marks Marino. "We kept attacking Dara and making her pull," explained Vanlandingham. Eventually, that strategy gave Vanlandingham a serious advantage that looked as though it would stick, but after Marks-Marino began to fade, Hanusova hit the gas to avoid being caught by the next group of chasers. "I could tell Dara was done," said Hanusova. "I just looked behind and saw a bunch of people possibly coming back, so I was like 'I'm going', I felt good and I had to go." Once clear of Marks-Marino, Hanusova made up the distance to Vanlandingham and narrowly took the win in a photo finish. "I just felt good today and it was down to a few of us. We both need a lot of points because we're both sitting high in the overall," clarified Hanusova. "It's about winning races and I just wanted to win today." Marks-Marino held on for third place ahead of Irmiger and Sue Haywood (Trek-Volkswagen), who rounded out the top five respectively. Hanusova now has a 50-point lead in the overall pro women's short track standings ahead of Haywood.
