The two broke away from the pack in the first few miles of the race and put 45 minutes on third place by the end. But Etough says that he and Bishop were in a true battle for the win. "It was pretty epic," Etough said on Saturday. "This is probably the best mountain bike course I've ever done." Perfect because it rained, he says. "It started out not too wet, just a little bit muddy, a little bit slick in places. About halfway through the race, it poured down. Which is actually good here because it's better wet than when the sun comes out and the mud turns sticky and clumpy!" Etough says he wanted to set an aggressive pace. "Jeremiah and I went off right from the beginning; I wanted to make it a hard race, make it tough from the start." So he and Bishop slipped away from the pack. "Interestingly enough though," Etough says, "We never rode more than twenty seconds apart." Etough led the race much of the time but Bishop maintained a relentless chase. "He (Bishop) caught and passed me on the second lap (of two). I re-passed him and was able to get small gaps on the long technical sections but it was pretty even." The big move for Bishop came on the last long climb, right around the forty mile mark in the fifty mile race. "Jeremiah actually put a minute on me on that climb," Etough said. By this point in the race, a thick fog had settled over the course. "The visibility was like fifteen yards," Etough said. "I was a minute, twenty seconds back with only about ten minutes to go and I actually, surprisingly, caught him. He appeared out of the fog; it was a bizarre image." Etough says Bishop saw him coming and pushed away. "Before I made contact, he sprinted. I was already at maximum after chasing him the last fifteen minutes so I couldn't match it. He won the race right there." Bishop (Harrisonburg, Va.) crossed the line in 3 hours, 55 minutes and 30 seconds, just 18 seconds ahead of Eatough. Heading into the seventh and final round, Eatough held a slim 13-point lead over Jay Henry (Ford/Specialized.) in the overall series competition. Henry opted to compete at this weekend's UCI Marathon World Championships in Lillehammer, Norway instead of the NORBA at Snowshoe so with his second-place points, Etough captured the overall championship. Henry will take second. Michael Janelle (Tokyo Joe's) takes third. In the women's marathon, Sawicki only needed to finish the race to clinch the series title. She came to Snowshoe with an insurmountable 839-466 lead over Shannon Gibson (El Paso, Texas
