Coromandel's Matarangi IntrigueMay 23, 2004Local knowledge wins NZ's newest MTB raceLocal knowledge won the day for Whitianga's Clinton Jackson when he took out Coromandel's Matarangi Intrigue mountain bike race. Established in 2003, this 65km tour of the Coromandel high country is fast becoming a favourite with mountain bikers looking to put some adventure back in their riding. With a course that changes every year and terrain as savage as it is scenic the emphasis in this race is as much on personal challenge as performance. After 2003's inaugural race women's winner Sadie Parker-Wynyard called it mountain biking how it used to be. Apparently she liked it too because the former New Zealand champion was back in 2004 for the second edition of the Matarangi Intrigue. Parker dominated the women's race in 2004. Finishing in 20th place overall the defending champion led from start to finish, opening up a 3min lead in the first 15km and eventually won 13min ahead of Levin's Karina Wilkinson in 4hrs 52min 50secs. But despite Parker's impressive ride the drama in the women's race came from the race for minor medals, with Wilkinson holding out Auckland's fast-finishing Christina Renhart by just 23secs. The men's race saw even more drama when the lead change no less than four times in less than four hours. A collection of the country's top riders lined up for the 65km event, with Auckland international rider Nick Hotchin opened up a slender lead over the first 15km. Behind Hotchin came Kiwi number four Mark Leishman, defending Matarangi champion Michael May, Hamilton's Miles Watson, Rotorua teenager Clinton Avery, local Whitianga rider Clinton Jackson and New Zealander number 10 Rod Hill. But shortly thereafter Hotchin was forced to withdraw with a broken derailleur while Leishman and defending champion Michael May made a play for the lead as the race neared halfway. The big mover through these middle stages, however, was Whitianga rider Clinton Jackson. Jackson is the world single speed mountain biking champion, but at the Matarangi Introgue he used a fully geared bike and enviable local knowledge to move through the field. Moving from sixth place early on, by 50km he had moved past Leishman to join Michael May at the front of the race. Then on the final 15km the local rider moved away for good, eventually crossing the Coromandel town finish line in 3hrs 39min 57secs. Behind him a fast finishing Mark Leishman overhauled Michael May to nab second place in 3hrs 41min 41secs. Not far behind them the talented Rotorua 16-year-old Clinton Avery followed Stuart Lynch across the line for fifth place overall. More than 300 riders turned out for the now annual mountain bike adventure. This year's course took in more than 1600m of climbing in the 65km, making it one of the toughest mountain bike races in the country. The Matarangi Intrigue is the latest endurance offering from local event organisers, Adventure racing Coromandel. All ARC events benefit the Spirit of Coromandel Trust set up to expose youth into the outdoors. Their next event is November's 200km K2 Classic, New Zealand's toughest road cycle event.
