MTB index page for all MTB content NORBA NCS #2 - E1USA, May 15-16, 2004Stage 4 - May 16: Short TrackDunlap and Decker finish strongAlison Dunlap (Luna Women) and Carl Decker (Giant/Pearl Izumi) took out today's short track event in Sonoma finishing off the weekend of racing and round two of the NORBA series. Controversy surrounded the sprint finish of the men's race with riders not knowing who actually won until after podium. On a technical course that consisted mainly of pavement, a little gravel road and lots of turns the women's race was aggressive from the start. It wasn't until the final lap however, that a breakaway attempt succeeded. It was Dunlap who attacked hard on the final small hill, taking Kerry Barnholt (Subaru Gary Fisher) with her. The pair sprinted for the line with Dunlap taking the win over Barnholt. Winning the sprint from the rest was Jimena Florit (RLX Ralph Lauren), with Katerina Hanusova (Luna Women) and Melanie McQuaid (Ford Racing) taking fourth and fifth. In the men's race Decker won in a photo finish sprint out of a bunch of nine. Early in the race yesterday's winner, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (RLX Ralph Lauren) suffered a flat tyre and was out of the running and gradually the field dwindled down to nine. Decker just out sprinted Frank Mapel (Specialized) but the initial decision made Mapel the winner. It wasn't until after the awards presentation had taken place that the judges changed their minds. Apparently there was a problem with the finish line camera on first viewing. All riders were givent he chance to view the finish of the race and all agreed on the final official results. Paul Rowney (Yeti) took third place in front of Chris Sheppard (Haro-Adidas) and Max Plaxton (Rocky Mountain).
