Taberlay and Mathison hit the early lead

With much of Tassie flooded, the rain decided to stop for the start of Wildside. All were geed up for the much anticipated MTB stage race in Tassie's West. Nic Deka has done a fantastic job organising the '04 event with some really solid infrastructure behind the event which would add to enjoyment and safety. The 300+ field would be in for a great four days, rain, hail or shine
Group A started after a nice little roll out down from Cradle Mountain car park to the start. The hole shot was won up by youngster Al Farley (Giant) who had stayed warm in his track suit until the last minute making sure he was super warm for the start.
The crucial point in the first stage came at one of the water crossings as Sid Taberlay (TIS/Cyclingnews.com) recalled, "It stayed together 'till about the halfway mark, we went though a water crossing and a few guys got caught up. Me and Rowney got through and just punched it."
Others behind could only watch as the decisive move was made. Chris Jongeward (Avanti) said of that point, "We got caught up in that river crossing and I just looked up at Sid pulling away, there was nothing we could do."
By the stage finish, Sid a healthy, 50sec lead over Rowney, whilst Trent Lowe pipped Pete Hatton for third. The finish was pretty tricky with a lot of water and a bit of heavy-muddy-sandy-stuff. "He came into the finish straight in front of me," Trent said of his and Pete Hatton's finish, "and hit a puddle and just went backwards!"
A bit further back, veteran and Rock Shox-SRAM figurehead, Rob Eva picked up a top ten finish with the cry of "Hey, the old boy's still got it. Kiraly just lost his bet [that he wouldn't finish behind the veteran, Eva, in any stage]."
Dual Junior World Champion, Lisa Mathison (Ghost), took out the ladies category with relative ease over Niki Gudex. Asked about the huge numbers she was racing with, Lisa commented, "I hardly looked behind to see if any other girls were close, I was too busy looking out for the river crossings!"
