MTB index page for all MTB content NZ Cross Country Championships - CNWellington, New Zealand, February 1, 2004Leuchs shines in the wetContinuous rain made conditions difficult for the 150 competitors at the NZ One-Off Championships Cross Country event at Long Gully, Wellington on Sunday 1st February. The usual six laps for the pro-elite men and five for the pro-elite women were both reduced by one lap due to the weather. In the men's Pro-Elite field, NZ's top internationally ranked rider, Kashi Leuchs, managed to have a great ride despite the conditions and took the NZ One-Off Champ title in a time of 1 hour 24 minutes and 45 seconds with Jason Clement of Levin just under a minute behind. Wayne Hiscock of Wellington was third in a time of 1 hr 27 mins 59 secs. The women's Pro-Elite race saw Sadie Parker-Wynard out within about the first 20 minutes with a crash that badly injured her leg. The NZ One-Off Champ title went to Sonia Foote of Rotorua, who rode extremely well to finish in 1hr 21 mins 44 secs and close behind was Robyn Wong, Wellington, who has been riding very well so far in the 2004 Subaru National Series. Robyn was under a minute behind, 1 hr 22mins 21secs, with Jennifer O'Connor of New Plymouth third, 1hr 35mins 39secs.
