Vanlandingham wins Los Alamos AMBC cross country

Shonny Vanlandingham (Durango, Co.) claimed first place in the 2004 Pajarito Punishment pro women's XC at the Los Alamos Fat Tire Festival, while Damian Calvert (Albuquerque, NM) won the men's pro race. The first year AMBC event was a point-to-point race covering over 27 miles with more than 4400 feet of climbing.

Vanlandingham made her decisive move on the grueling five mile Pipeline Road climb where she came around the wheel of Nina Baum (Albuquerque, NM). The Luna Women rider then began to separate herself from the competition putting more than ten minutes on Baum by the finish. Baum held on to second place with Susan Fiore of Taos, New Mexico coming in third.

The rugged course took its toll on the men's pro field as several riders had mechanical problems. However, Damian Calvert was able to use his local knowledge of the technical course to claim first place in the pro men's field with a time of 2:32:31. While Cale Redpath (Durango, Co.) and Jesse Rients (Lakefield, Co.) kept it close with all three podium finishers maintaining average speeds well over 10 mph across the mostly single track trails.
