Hesjedal takes his second Norba win for 2003, Florit defends Title

Ryder Hesjedal (Subaru Gary Fisher) continued his recent success today when he won the second round of the NORBA series at Snowshoe Valley, West Virginia. In wet conditions that were "like riding in peanut butter", according to his teammate Mary Grigson, Hesjedal battled the mud and took yet another win to put himself in the overall lead of the series.

With Roland Green sitting out this race, while still recovering from his crash at the Tour de Georgia earlier this year, Hesjedal started as the favourite and did not disappoint. He took an early lead and after the first lap of the shortened two-lap course he was just holding off Todd Wells (Mongoose Hyundai).

Halfway through the second lap a group of four including Paul Rowney (Sobe Cannondale), Kashi Leuch (Maxxis Trek), Seamus McGrath (Haro-Lee Dungarees) and Jeremy Horgen kobelski (RLX Ralph Loren) who had been chasing hard, reeled in Wells and continued to chase. Hesjedal was just too strong for them, however and he came across the line 12 seconds in front of second placed Jeremy Horgen-Kobelski who had powered away in the final kilometers.

In the women's race, it was Jimena Florit (RLX Ralph Loren) who gained from a stroke of bad luck to Alison Dunlap (Luna Chix) and successfully defended her title to win this race for the second time.

Early aggression came from local rider Sue Haywood (Trek Volkswagen) as she attempted to get a firm lead over Dunlap on the downhill section to Shavers Mountain. Dunlap kept the pace on consistently however, and before long she had caught and passed Haywood and was well on her way to winning this race.

With over a minute to spare over the chasing group of Haywood, Florit and Katarina Husanova (Luna Chix), Dunlap crashed on the descent and injured her shoulder. Her forced abandonment from the race opened up an opportunity for Florit to back up her win from last year, and that she did.

In a crowd-pleasing finish Florit crossed the line to take the race ahead of Chrissy Redden (Subaru Gary Fisher) who had a strong finish to come in second. In third place was Hanusova followed by Haywood. Florit was very pleased with her race, but "bummed" that Dunlap had fallen into bad luck. "I am very happy to win this race again. It was hard out there in the mud, a real mental battle."

Local rider Haywood was also pleased with her race and explained her tactics: "I wanted to get to the downhill section first. Alison and I were battling. I had a pretty good lead at the bottom of the downhill but couldn't hold it. This is a great course for me with a downhill at the start and then once you climb you can feel your legs. I had good climbing legs, but not good running legs."

It is not known for sure what damage Dunlap has done to her shoulder, as it is 100 miles to the nearest hospital in Snowshoe Valley.
