Canadian flags hang high in Idaho

Both Roland Green (Trek Volkswagen) and Chrissy Redden (Subaru-Gary Fisher) waved the Canadian flag today as they took out their respective events at the fourth round of the NORBA National Mountain Bike Series in Sandpoint, Idaho.

On a hot, dry and dusty day, riders set out for the first pro event of the weekend, a course with low visibility with plenty of power climbs. The course was so dry that some riders resorted to wearing dust masks.

Women

In the women's race Redden hit the throttle early for the fight for position up the 2 mile fire road climb and it was a case of chase the rabbit all day for the rest of the field. She won the race without ever seeing a rider in front of her.

Alison Sydor (Trek Volkswagen), joined by Dara Marks (Sobe Cannondale) were chasing Redden within sight and after the first lap were holding a gap to about 30" but it was Jimena Florit who had a spectacular ride coming from way back to get closest to the winner at the end of the day, taking second place. American Shonny Vanlandingham (Luna Chix) came through to take third place ahead of Alison Sydor (Trek Volkswagen) and Marks.

In the Men's race Roland Green came from behind to take his second win of the series obviously having recovered from his broken collarbone earlier in the season. It was Ryder Hesjedal (Subaru-Gary Fisher) who led the race up the first climb and found himself solo for the first lap, holding off a group of five chasers by at least a minute. In the chase group were Green, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (RLX-Ralph Lauren), Adam Craig (Giant-Pearl Izumi), Jeremiah Bishop (Trek East Coast), and Seamus McGrath (Haro-Lee Dungarees).

In the second lap Green decided to make his move and caught and passed Hesjedal to take the solo lead himself, continuing on to take the win by about 45". Filip Meirhaeghe (Specialized) also came from behind, passing the chasing group with his steady consistent pace, but not quite making it up to Green. He took second place ahead of Horgan-Kobelski, Hesjedal and Bishop.
