Gunn Rita Dahle (Nor) Norway 2 Stage 6 ReportComing!Stage 6 Report from Karen KurreckThis morning we had a 61km relatively flat stage. With only a short criterium left tonight, this was really the last chance for anyone to make up time. EVERYONE wanted to go for it. This was really the first stage where the riders made the race, not the course and it ended up being one of the hardest stages!Everyone was predicting that Anna Wilson would really drive things today and sure enough she did. Suzy Pryde also made a number of attacks. We started with a cat 2 QOM only 3km into the race and the attacks started right from the bottom. Things didn't split too much on the climb and Lenka took the QOM. Suzy attacked over the top and the pace never slowed after that. Anna made a number of attacks but she was watched pretty closely. Leigh got away solo for quite awhile. Tracey sent her team to the front and they had to chase a long time to catch Leigh. Eventually Miriam Melchers went and Yvonne McGregor and Liz Tadich went after her. Yvonne is in the top 10 so this was danger for Tracey. Her team was pretty fried by this point though so she had to chase herself. A lot of others had something to lose too so she got some help. It wasn't very organized though and people were still attacking. A Queensland rider got a gap and then Kathy Watt took off after her with Leigh on her wheel. They caught the Queensland rider and we could see both groups dangling in front. Liz Tadich was sitting on the front break. Eventually we caught Kathy's group, but the other 3 were still up about 30 sec. Anna made a well timed attack and made it up to them. Now both she and Liz could work so it was more dangerous. Nobody in the field was anxious to let things go though. It was mostly Tracey, Suzy, Mari, myself, Leigh, GUnn- Rita and a Mazza rider doing the chasing. THe pace was high and there was a strong crosswind so we were in the gutter the whole time. Still, we weren't quite organized. There was a lot of surging and a lot of people were already at their limit. The Dutch and the British were blocking. Suzy attacked a few times but never got too far. With about 5-10km to go, Miriam got dropped out of the break and we passed her. The other 3 were only 20-30 sec. ahead, but we never quite caught them. Anna won the stage with Liz 2nd and Yvonne 3rd. Suzy won the sprint for 4th. I don't have results yet, but I think the gap was around 20-25 sec at the end. Yvonne and Anna will move up in GC, but probably not past 4th. Barbara Heeb and Sari got dropped in the crosswinds and lost about 4 min so they will drop out of the top 10. Tonight is a 30km criterium which is the last stage. |
