She had already been extremely lucky yesterday in a spectacular crash into a road-side guard rail on a fast descent. But today she dominated the stage when she attacked at km 19 and stayed away at the front for 46 kms. She was then joined by English rider Sarah Symington (at km 65) and the duo worked together to remain clear of the peloton. As they wound up for the final sprint, Liz Tadich's shoe snapped out of her pedal some 500 metres out from the line. Luckily, it was far enough out for her to recover and go on to take the sprint. The blue leader's jersey was retained by US rider Karen Kurreck. Stage 4 Report by Karen KurreckOur day started at 6am with a knock on the door from the UCI vampires. They came all the way from France to the Australian outback to check our hematocrits. Oh well, I was about due for a blood test anyway!Today was a relatively flat 83km with only 1 cat 3 climb. I think there were a lot of tired legs from yesterday. The first 15km or so were pretty mellow. After that there were a few attacks and Elizabeth Tadich from the Australian Jayco team got away. She crashed yesterday so she is something like 15 min down on GC and the pack let her go. Kathy Watt took off after her and dangled in the gap for a long time but never caught up to Liz and eventually came back to the pack. The Dutch and British teams kept trying to bridge but Anna WIlson and the rest of the Jayco team did a good job of blocking. The attacks from the pack kept the pace up, so Liz's gap never got much over a minute, but she stayed off. Shortly before the climb, a group including a Dutch rider, 2 Jaycos and Sarah Symington from Great Britian got a small gap. At this point we could just see Liz up the climb. Everyone came back to the pack on the climb except Sarah who caught up to Liz. Lenka Llaskva took the 3rd place QOM from the pack. At the top everyone sat up for a bit and Sarah and Liz's gap grew over 2 min. At this point there was only about 10km to go and the speed picked up with everyone thinking about the sprint for 3rd. Liz Tadich won the stage with Sarah in 2nd. Anna Wilson took the sprint for 3rd around 1 1/2 min back. I don't have results yet so that's about all I know. GC didn't change much in the top 10 since Sarah started the day about 7 min down. I keep the leader's jersey for another day. Tomorrow is another mountain stage 2 cat 1 climbs and 5 cat 2s. |
