Stage 4, Newcastle - Port Stephens, 60 km

The road stage from Newcastle to Port Stephens may be just 60 kilometres but has always been one of the best road stages of the tour.

After departing the city centre of Newcastle, the cyclists will travel along the Industrial Highway over Stockton Bridge and then straight through to the beautiful seaside location of Nelson Bay.

The relatively flat road, with the exception of Stockton Bridge, has been responsible for splitting the field in to small groups as the cross winds play havoc with the race.

Last year's winner Jans Koerts defeated English star Jeremy Hunt and Jono Hall in a major sprint finish which began more than 5 kilometres from the finish line.

The speed of the race was quite exceptional with Koerts recording an average time of 48.85 kph, which was faster than the previous year set by Raimondas Rumsas.

The final kilometre includes a tricky descent into the finish line and a large bunch is a great spectacle as they descend Victoria Parade past the Nelson bay Marina.
