German Dirk Schumann
(Bosch) took his second criterium victory in a row in this evening's
30 kilometre race in Batemans Bay. The German speedster benefited from
being near the top of the field on the final lap, as a crash took out
sprinters Jans Koerts, Graeme Brown and Ashley Hutchinson. Second and
third places went to Dupont riders Matthew Illingworth and Yento Barker,
however there will be some sore bodies tonight.
The race was of
a similar format to last night - a square, 850 metre circuit with no
tight corners. After the bunch got going, the main aggressors seemed
to be Brent Dawson (QANTAS) and Matt Illingworth (DuPont) who attacked
repeatedly. However, no breaks got more than a few seconds as everyone
seemed to be on the alert tonight.
Towards the end
of the race, the leader Grzegorz Wajs could be seen near the front,
trying to set himself up for a possible sprint bonus as a cushion to
Julian Winn. The latter, in his polka dot King of the Mountains jersey
was not far behind, and was well supported by his teammates.

Matthew Illingworth
led the race with a lap to go, with the German Schumann on his wheel.
Sprint King Jans Koerts was about fourth or fifth wheel on the second
last corner when he somehow slipped and fell hard. Also coming down
in the crash were NSWIS riders Ashley Hutchinson and Graeme Brown, and
Dirk Schumann was left to take the easiest of wins.
"I'm very happy,"
said the German afterwards for the second time in two nights.
Koerts was actually
knocked unconscious for a short time, and when he got up to ride across
the line he had half a pair of shorts on and massive bruises and cuts
down his left hand side. It was bad luck for the big sprinter, who had
only last night spoken with Graeme Brown and manager Gary Sutton about
Brown's 'immaturity' in bunch sprints. Although the three had seen eye
to eye then, it could have backfired completely if Brown had caused
Koerts to crash. However, the Dutchman admitted that it was his fault
although he didn't quite know what happened, and it was unfortunate
that he took out the others.
There are two days
and three stages left in the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic, and the
race is still wide open. Tomorrow there will be just one stage, a 102
kilometre circuit race using the Women's World Cup circuit in Canberra.
On Sunday morning there will be possibly the decisive stage of the race,
a 13 km time trial in Canberra, with a 36 km criterium to conclude the
race.
