Bosch strike back

The German Bosch
team, who dominated the Cycle Classic for many years, took out their
first stage of this year's edition, a 30 km evening criterium in Nowra.
Dirk Schumann profited from the excellent work of teammate, Stephan
Gottschling in the final lap, winning from Ashley Hutchinson and Jans
Koerts.
The three were
part of an eight rider break that escaped two thirds of the way through
the race. They quickly established a gap on the very fast course, an
800 metre block near Nowra's town centre. All the sprinters were in
it: Jans Koerts (Websdale), Hilton McMurdo (Glen Parker-Fondriest),
Graeme Brown and Ashley Hutchinson (NSWIS). The other members of the
break were Matt Illingworth (DuPont), Dan Smith (QANTAS) and Stephan
Gottschling (Bosch).
Smith was his usual
aggressive self, trying to repeat his criterium win here last year.
However, despite many attempts he was unable to break free, and the
eight were more or less together on the final lap. It was here that
the Bosch team launched their one-two punch, sending Stephan Gottschling
out as the 'rabbit' while Schumann bided his time.

It was a risky move,
although Schumann has been strong in all the sprints he has contested.
The others were forced to chase down Gottschling, leaving Schumann in
second wheel on the final corner. He sped down the straight in his biggest
gear, cleanly beating Ashley Hutchinson and Jans Koerts, with second
and third places decided in a photo finish.
It was the first
win for Bosch and Schumann managed a few words after the finish. "On
the last lap I was in a good position near Jans Koerts. I was on his
wheel on the last corner," he said in brief English.
Was it good for
Bosch? "Ja, good," he finished.
Tomorrow will see
the 52 rider peloton tackle another road stage/criterium. The first
stage from Milton to Bateman's Bay is 120 kilometres, run over undulating
roads, finishing with an out and back leg from Moruya back to Batemans
Bay. There follows the traditional 30 kilometre criterium on another
fast circuit in the centre of Bateman's Bay.
