Stage 9, Centennial Park, 100 kms:Thursday, October 28, 1999 |
Centennial Park has been a major part of Australian cycling for the majority of the century. Now as we move towards a new millennium, it will become the focus of world cycling when it hosts much of the Olympic Games circuit in 2000.
This circuit race is an ideal opportunity to showcase the international cyclists and a large weekday crowd assembles to cheer the cyclists around the 2.86 kilometre circuit. Last year it proved a great triumph for Ben Brooks, Graeme Brown's team mate who made it back to back wins for the NSW Institute team. The two previous years had also been decided by breakaways, with Jay Sweet winning in a solo breakaway in 1997 and in the first year it was New Zealand rider Glen Mitchell who took the honours over his own team mate Gordon McCauley and Jonathon Hall.
