Stage 8, Terrigal Criterium, 30 kms:Wednesday, October 27, 1999 |
Terrigal has always been one of the favourite criterium courses for both television and the riders, with the course offering a fast and exciting end to a tough day of racing. And the venue itself, conducted around the two major two blocks of the CBD, allows the public to enjoy the meals available and help provide a wonderful European atmosphere. The beach, which lines the finish straight, sets the scene and makes for a special night.
The crowds certainly enjoy the speed and precision pedalling of the cyclists who rise to the occasion and provide something special every year. Motorola's wonderful five lap lead out for Max Van Heeswyk's win in 1995 was an unbelievable effort while the Giant Australia team replicated Motorola's performance for Jay Sweet in 1997. Last year a new star emerged when World Junior champion Graeme Brown flashed past Jay Sweet and Jans Koerts to record his first stage win. It was a remarkable effort and one of the fastest ever finishes to this great criterium. From the archives - Criterium specialist Bob Rasenberg in 1992 |
