Stage 15, Canberra Criterium, 36 kms:

Sunday, October 31, 1999

The Healthpact sponsored final criterium stage is a 'ripper' with most of the sprinters aiming to complete the race on a high note. The circuit, with its two 'U' turns and two 'S' bends, is unrelenting for the cyclists, but fantastic for the spectators and television viewers.

Last year, the final stage was no exception with many of the sprint stars lasting the distance in the hope of claiming the final stage. Graeme Brown and Koerts seemed certain to fight out for the major honours, with Koerts needing to finish ahead of Rumsas to claim the sprint king title. However a charge to the lead by Rumsas broke the field as well as the sprinters. Bates Bikes Kazakhstan star, Dimitry Fofonov, broke through for a stage win just ahead of Michael Weissman from Bosch, and Brown. Rumsas finished fourth and claimed the sprint king title. This should conclude another great tour and may even determine the race just like in 1986, 1993 and 1995.
