Stage 11, Wollongong-Nowra, 107 kms:Friday, October 29, 1999 |
This stage was tough enough prior to the introduction of Jamberoo Pass into
the journey several years ago, and will remain a major pressure point for
the sprinters and the yellow jersey wearer.
The Jamberoo Pass, situated 37 km after the start of the stage, is made even tougher by several sharp climbs in the lead up to the Pass, and the field always splits up. It is how the teams can react and protect their major contenders and nurse them through Kangaroo Valley towards the final climb on Cambewarra Mountain, where riders can lose even more time. The final 12 kilometres is covered very quickly as the cyclists descend for Nowra and reach speeds of over 100 kph. Last year's eight man lead pack sprinted for line honours, in stark contrast to Jonothan Hall's great solo win, by five minutes, the year before. From the archives - It was tough in 1995 |
