Coupe du Monde Cyclo-Cross #3 - CDMLiéven, France, January 5, 2003Nijs beats unlucky GroenendaalA puncture in the closing stages of the race cost Richard Groenendaal his second World Cup win, allowing Belgian Sven Nijs to capitalise on the mistake and win his first World Cup this season. A triumphant Nijs won by 19 seconds, with Groenendaal ending as second followed by Bart Wellens and the rest of the Belgians. Groenendaal now has the outright lead in the World Cup, but only by 10 points. The men's race reached a decisive point just after halfway, when Nijs and Groenendaal broke clear from De Clercq and Wellens, the latter who had recovered from a slow start. The leading pair, who ride for different countries but the same trade team, made good their escape, and it was clear that the victory would be fought out between the two. However with one lap to go, Groenendaal slid out on a left hand bend as a result of his flat tyre. Sven Nijs immediately attacked, and won by a handy margin. "Without the flat tyre I would have won," said a disappointed Groenendaal at the finish. "If I had noticed that the tyre was flat five metres before, I could have got another bike. Then it was finished." I am very heavily disappointed. OK, I'm now the outright leader in the World Cup but the win would have been normal for me." Sven Nijs commented to Belgian Radio 1 that "Groenendaal and I were worthy of each other. Richard had bad luck and as a result, I won." Nijs also named himself as one of the favourites for the Belgian championships next weekend, along with Bart Wellens and Mario De Clercq. "I will rest a lot this week and come to the start without stress. Therefore I won't read any newspapers," said Nijs.
