Gullickson travels cross-country to take Verge Series Opener

By John Verheul

Marc Gullickson of Mongoose/Hyundai flew across the country to start in the DownEast Cyclo-Cross. His competition saw him fly away early in the race.

The former US National Champion and Overall SuperCup champion grabbed the lead on lap 1, breaking away with the newly married Jonathan Page (Richard Sachs), and never looked back as he claimed the race title. With that win, Gullickson also takes the blue leader's jersey in the 2002 Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series.

Gullickson had an atypically poor start in his first 'cross race of the year, and had to work hard to pull back the early leaders - including fast starter and series promoter Adam Hodges Myerson (NCC/Bikereg.com). As soon as he did, he attacked straight through near the end of the first lap. Page was the only rider able to respond, although a hard working Peter Wedge (Kona) made a valiant effort. Defending Verge Series champion Mark McCormack of Saturn chased the two leaders, and eventually made contact with Page as Gullickson rode away. Gullickson rode a steady effort for the rest of the race alone to finish 18 seconds up on Page. To his credit, the Richard Sachs rider never let up the entire way, while McCormack was forced to limit his efforts and ride alone for a solid third place on the day. "I was able to ride at 90% pretty easily, but I needed to go a lot harder than that today" said the veteran pro.

Canadian National Champion Pete Wedge broke away from a group of three late in the race to take fourth. He was followed in by the US U23 National Champion, and a native of Corinth, ME, Adam Craig (Giant).

On the women's side, last year's runner-up Mary McConnelough (Seven Cycles) got an excellent start, took the lead over the first of two sets of barriers on the course, and never looked back. McConnelough rode a very steady race to finish 2:55 in front of the second placed rider, while behind her there were tight battles for the rest of the top five spots on the day. Canadian National Champion Shauna Gillies-Smith gave the host Gearworks/SRP team something to cheer about by holding off the super smooth Jodi Groesbeck (Putney/West Hill) for second. Behind them, rising star Alicia Genest (Richard Sachs) held off Gearworks/SRP's Sara Cushman for fourth.

Saturn Development team rider and U.S. junior national champion Jesse Anthony ran away with the junior race in a dominant performance. CCB's Konrad Lebas made a valiant effort to stay with Anthony on lap 1, but Anthony ran away to a winning margin of over four minutes. Lebas was able to hold off Josh Benson (MVBC) for third.

Other winners on the day donning new Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series leader's jerseys were Sam Morse in Men's 35+, Paul Curley in Men's 45+, and Matt Hersey in the Men's B race. The Men's C race winner was Ethan Fogg, while Jean Cunningham won the Women's B race and Keith Brown took the Beginner Junior race.

With over $25,000 in prize money, six internationally sanctioned rounds in five states, and all events world-class, the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series is once again the premier cyclo-cross racing series in the U.S. Verge, the title Sponsor of the New England Cyclo-Cross Series produces custom jerseys, shorts, knickers, tights, armwarmers and other cycling-related accessories. Look for the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series jersey on the backs of the Series Leaders, and look for the Verge truck at the races.

Other series supporters include Cycle-Smart coaching, promotions & management; Time Sport USA, designer and manufacturer of cycling pedals, shoes and forks; The Ride Magazine, exhaustively covering East Coast Bike Culture; Honey Stinger, convenient honey-based energy foods; and BikeReg.com, the premier on-line registration company for cycling events.

Round 2 of the 2001 Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series will be the ECV Cyclo-Cross, held on Sunday, Oct. 13 in Gloucester, Mass. Like the Downeast Cyclo-Cross, it is a U.S. team selection event for the World Championships and a UCI Category 2 race.
