Strong showing for inaugural Liberty Forge 'Cross

By Mike Hebe

Approximately 140 riders turned out for the inaugural Liberty Forge Cyclocross event Sunday November 24th. The event hosted the 2002 PA State Championships.

The course was met with rave reviews from all competitors & spectators alike. With the course snaking in front of and across a large spectating deck 5 times the racers were met with constant cheers. A great mix of off-camber hill riding, a hill run-up after a double, a sand pit, a run through a mulch playground, 3 times crossing a low area that still held the water from the past weeks rain, a nice gradual climb that encompassed, and a tough downhill/uphill section 250 meters from the section meant that power & technical riding were the terms of the day.

Amber Itle of Wissahickon Cyclery has stepped up to the Women's A this year, & put on a great race to be crowned the PA State champion. Sh was followed in by pro roadies Charmian Breon (Freddie Fu) & pro Mt bike race Kristine Oesterling (Trek), who were PA Silver & Bronze medal winners respectively.

The men's race was filled with top-notch Mid Atlantic talent to contest a $1,200 prize purse & the pride of being State Champ. From the gun Greg Ferguson (Wissahickon Cyclery) got a tremendous start. Following in his wake were Ryan Dewald (Beans), Gunnar Shogren (Fort Frames) & the Guys Bicycles duo of defending State Champ & runner-up Mike Yozell & Ryan Leech. After a technical mishap by Ferguson, he was left to chase all race from deep in the field to an incredible 5th place finish.

Meanwhile Dewald, Shogren, Yozell & Leech were trading punches at the front for the first 3 or 4 laps. Dewald was the first to pop, after the long gradual climb by the pits. The front three were motoring along and trading work quite nicely it seemed, content to ride hard by themselves, but not really put in an attack. Through the sand with 1 1/2 to go Leech put in a very hard move to shake things up, but everyone was there. Now the crowd was getting antsy, wondering when one of the Guys duo was going to go on the final attack to drop the ageless Shogren. After 50 minutes of racing and constant Guys double-teaming, nothing worked and all 3 riders hit the finish line together for the bell lap.

Yozell was at the front and driving the bus, while Shogren sat in second wheel. Up the run and across the off-camber hill section all three were still together. Going around the pavillion Leech attacked to try to hit the sand first, but Shogren countered and was in & out of the sand pit first. Everything settled and the trio were riding together all the way around. As they hit the grass straightaway 300 meters from the nasty downhill the uphill section everyone was wondering which Guys rider would attack and get through the section first. There was no attack & Shogren hit it first. All were out clean & with 250 meters to the finish they were still together.

The crowd was gathered & going nuts, as we had a three-up sprint. Shogren led it out, and got a gap. Yozell was closing on the uphill rise, but Gunnar held on and got the victory, overall. Mike Yozell came through second, but took the title of PA State Champ for the second straight year. Ryan Leech just fell off the sprint, and comes through the bridesmaid, for the PA Silver medal title, for the second year in a row. Ryan Dewald did a fine job holding on to the PA Bronze medal.

In the Masters race, race promoter/director, Mike Hebe (PA Pension Planners) fell just short of the overall victory as his riding partner for the day, Randy Root (Snow Valley) took the sprint win. Hebe did get the honor of being PA State Masters champion.

Thanks to all who raced and especially our title sponsor www.libertyforge.net
