Justin Robinson stormed away from his 3 breakaway companions with 3 laps to go to win the Senior Men's 2002 NorCal Districts. Known for his technical riding, Robinson made like a roadie by opening up his 30 second gap on the flat and fast sections of the Vacaville course.

Chasing was a trio that included Robinson's Bullion/Spokesman teammate Ben Jacques Maynes and two Clif Bar riders, Jackson Stewart and Andy Jacques Maynes.

"I didn't intend to go from that far out" noted Robinson, "but when Jackson dropped his chain I attacked and got a gap."

In the fight for 2nd place, Ben Jacques Mayne outsprinted Jackson Stewart by a foot, with Andy Jacques Mayne trailing in 3rd. All 3 were given the same time.

In the Senior Women's race, Carmen D'Alusio (Clif Bar) soloed to victory, putting a minute on teammate Gina Hall (Clif Bar), and two minutes on Christine Vardaros (SallySpicer.com). The 3 riders had been off together for half the race when Vardaros was gapped. D'Alusio attacked a lap later to open her winning margin.

Other races

Masters Men 35: James Coats (Steelman) and Rich Maile (Clif) showed they were the class of the masters by breaking away early and sharing the load to stay off, in front of a chasing Todd Hoefer. Both Coats and Maile showed superior skills by riding the steep "Voler hill" while most of their competitors ran. In the sprint, Coats took the championship by edging Maile.

Masters Men 45/55: In the 45's Henry Kramer (Equipe Le Matin), Cass Laizure (Clif) and Norm Kreiss (Clif) formed an efficient early break that held together till the last lap when Kreiss was dropped and Kramer outsprinted Laizure. In the 55's, National 55+ Champ John Elgart (Webcor/AltoVelo) held off chasing Tom Regan (Alta Alpina).

Junior Men: Juozas Martynaitis (Bicycle Warehouse) soloed in front of Luke Brechwald (Nevada Union HS) to take the Junior title. The Juniors raced with the C's and Jo was 2nd overall.

Espoirs: Steve Cozza (who has ridden as a Junior this year, but will be an Espoir for Worlds) took the Espoirs title easily. He would have been 13th in the Senior Men.

Master Women's 35/45: As expected, Shelly Whisenhant (Velo Bella) took the 35's by escaping with 45's winner Linda Elgart (Webcor/AltoVelo), and after less than one one lap, going solo to the win. Whisenhant, though starting as minute behind the Senior Women, passed all but 3 of the younger field. Second in the 35's was Colleen Wanty (Missing Link), while Carol Breed was second in the 45's.

Single Speeders: Cameron Falconer (Hunter/DFI) took a lap out of his competition in the single speed division. Racing with the Senior A's, Cameron wold have been 17th.

Sponsors and Thank Yous: We want to thank Clif Bar for their support of Districts and the Sacramento Cyclocross Series. Also Voler Team Apparel, Terry Products for Women, DeFeet Socks, Travis Credit Union, Realty World Tri City, Ray's Cycle, and La Esperanza Mexican Restaurant.
