McDonald comes good

League leader Robin Seymour was a non-starter in the fourth round of the Cyclo-cross League, promoted by Banbridge CC at Solitude Park, Banbridge. The Irish champion was away with his WORC teammates for winter training in Spain, giving his closest rivals the opportunity to overtake him in the standings.

The field were sent off in four bunches with the scratch bunch giving away allowances of 1.30, 2.30 and 4.30, and Matthew Ferguson (XMTB) from the first group went into an early lead.

He was eventually overtaken by round one winner Michael Mulvenna (Ards CC), who in turn was caught and passed by the other Ferguson brother, Lewis, but he in turn lost the lead when he had to stop with chain trouble.

Roger Aiken (Banbridge CC) then took over at the front, closely pursued by another scratch rider, Aidan McDonald (Apollo CT). At the bell Aiken led by 10 seconds and looked certain of the win before he too had his chain off, allowing McDonald to come through and beat him by 20 seconds with Mulvenna holding on for third, 30 seconds ahead of Lewis Ferguson.

With two rounds remaining before the championship, Aiken now leads the league from McDonald with Seymour dropping to third. Next Saturday's round will be promoted by XMTB at Stormont, 12.00, (entrance by Massey Avenue gates).

Aidan McDonald of Apollo CT came good in the fourth counter of Cycling Ireland's Cyclo-Cross League held in Banbridge.

Held in Solitude Park, in the town which proved a bonus for the spectators and true to the organiser's comments: "This years course, while similar to last year's, will feature less of the long drag along the sodden grass and shall be replaced with something to tantalise even the strongest rider," said Andy Potts of the promoting club, Banbridge CC.

Evidently McDonald found the course to his satisfaction and at the finish had a margin of 20 seconds over Roger Aiken of the promoting club with the junior from Ards CC, Michael Mulvenna, back in third place. Aiken now goes to the top of the league table after the no-show of leader, Robin Seymour, who is in Spain. Don Travers who was second in the league prior to fourth counter, failed to have a top finish, thus losing thus losing valuable points.
