The North Carolina Cyclo-cross race series kicked off its first event with the Inland Construction - BTD (Back to Dirt Racing) Cyclo-cross Classic, under blue skies and continued warm weather for October (even for the southeast). The Meredith College course in Raleigh, North Carolina was incredibly winding (and tape consumptive!) which provided a challenge for racers, as well as spectators. Both the men's and women's races showed record-breaking growth - a strong indication of the exponential growth in cyclo-cross in the southeast, as well as throughout the US.

The premier events in the afternoon saw new UVA/MBA student Mandy Lozano, riding for the Vanderkitten, come back to her old hometown to take the win in the elite women's race. Mandy cleared the field and was chased throughout the race by former team-mate and long time friend Cara McCauley (BMW Bianchi). Annie Lux (HT Naturals) continued great form from the road season by taking third place (and then going to another venue in Raleigh to compete in a 5km run!). Angelina Stevens, now riding for Inland Construction-BTD, chased closely but never quite reached Lux and had to be content with fourth place to begin the series.

In the men's pro/1,2 race, local favorite Charlie Pendry (Inland Construction - BTD) raced a very strong race to take the win over Will Black (KCCX/Verge), newcomer to the North Carolina Series. Pendry had a couple of mechanicals, but still managed to take Black for the win. Pendry, a pro mountain and 'cross rider had great form in the NMBS mountain bike series this year and hopes to use that form for collegiate nationals this coming weekend and the rest of the cyclo-cross season. Brothers Lucas (Inland - BTD) and Travis Livermon (Cycling Spoken Here) battled throughout the race with Travis taking third and Lucas fourth.

The NC Cyclo-cross Series continues next Sunday in Salisbury, NC.
