Leech, Winfield win 2006 Charm City Cyclocross

The 2006 Mid Atlantic Bicycle Racing Association's cross series kicked off with the Charm City Cyclocross in Baltimore, Maryland. The race, in it's second year, had a huge turnout under a mix of sunny and stormy skies. The rain held off until after all the races were complete but the days real storm was on the fast and twisty race course.

The Men's A race started off fast and a lead group quickly formed, powered by the Hunt Valley-Marathon Roofing duo of George Menard and Sean Galegher. Defending champion Ryan Leech (Meredith Group- Cannondale-GPOA) said he was surprised by how fast they were driving the pace. Several unsuccessful attacks were launched off the front of this group most notably by Menard and Ryan McKinney (Team Snow Valley). Attack after attack was brought back until Ghallager was able to get away with Leech and they quickly opened a gap.

As the laps counted down it was obvious the winner was going to be one of these two, but which one? Galegher looked strong and was often in the lead but Leech sensing his companion getting sloppy attacked on the barriers at the bottom of the back side run up. Leech rode the remaining few laps solo to repeat his win of one year ago. Sean Galegher came in second with Fort Frames rider Greg Ferguson rounding out the top three.

The women's event saw the top three riders quickly form a lead group. Overcoming the two Velo Bella-Kona teammates, Deidre Winfield and Melanie Swartz, was too much for mountain bike national champion Georgia Gould (Luna Women's MTB Team). Winfield attacked Gould and quickly gained a lead. Although Gould tried until the end, this gap was too much for her, and she had to settle for second. Swartz finished out the podium in third.
