Predictably warm temperatures and bright, clear skies greeted hundreds of racers to this year's Surf City Cyclocross Series opener. The fun vibe of the Velo Bella promoted event - chock full of Tiki decorations, limbo cross silliness, and kiddiecross, attracted beginners and world class racers alike.

The elite men's race was a three way battle between some of the top riders on the US scene. Barry Wicks (Kona), and brothers Ben Jacques-Maynes (Cyclocrossworld.com) and Andy Jacques-Maynes (California Giant Strawberries) separated themselves from the field early with a scorching first lap pace on the demanding NorCross course. Each rider would take turns stomping on the accelerator, none willing to race conservatively in front of the home crowds. Kona's Wicks eventually assumed control of the race with his effortless gait, stepping away from first Andy, and then Ben to win by nearly a minute. Notable was the battle for 4th behind, between master's champion Justin Robinson (California Giant Strawberries) and Simon Vickers (Rocklobster/HRS). Robinson would throw in bunny hop attacks on the last two laps' barrier sections, sending the crowd wild with appreciation. But a last minute flat would give the placing to a resilient Vickers.

The elite women's event saw a $100 hot lap prime presented by Vanderkitten apparel. Stella Carey (Rocklobster/HRS) took charge of the race by storming up the gravel, uphill opening straight but bobbled a bit on the tough 180 degree turn into the grassy infield section. Rachel Lloyd (Proman) took advantage and stormed past to open a few seconds gap on a chasing group of four. Sarah Kerlin (Velo Bella - Kona), thus far unbeaten in the NorCross circuit, would suffer a mechanical just past the barrier section, effectively putting her at the back of the women's field, sending Lloyd off the front of the group to take the Vanderkitten cash and establish a sizeable gap on the field. Kerlin would eventually make her way through the field and up to California Giant Strawberry teammates Josie Beggs and Melodie Metzger, and Carey. Kerlin passed the others and chased hard but was not be able to catch Lloyd who seems to be making a formidable comeback from retirement.

Henry Kramer (California Giant Strawberries) used the run up on the final lap to distance himself from James Coats (Morgan Stanley/Specialized) to win the always competitive Men 35+ event.

New Belgium Brewing beer and Gizdich Ranch pie were on the line in the limbo cross event, where competitors adorned in hula flair, attempted to go under the barriers instead of over. The promoters have yet to figure out who exactly won the spectacle. But all entrants were winners in the super exciting Kiddie Kross event, where kids 12 and under would compete on their own kiddie sized cross course.
