Robson and Kerlin take CCCX victories

By Keith DeFiebre

Two time men's Masters National Champion Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) and women's Masters National Champion Sarah Kerlin(Velo Bella/Kona) claimed Elite Cyclocross wins at the Central Coast Cyclocross Series' second race held on the former Army barracks of Fort Ord in Monterey. Robinson and Kerlin both emerged as winners from solid elite fields on a fast on dry course that favored speed as well as technical riding ability.

After three laps of the men's Elite race, Robinson, Cameron Falconer (Hunter/DFL), and Michael Hernandez (Safeway) established a break and looked set for a three way fight for the win. However, Hernandez ran out of luck with a costly flat, and Falconer ran out of steam on the final lap. In the end, it was Justin Robinson claiming his first Cross win of the season by 10 seconds over Falconer, with Hernandez 53 seconds back at the line. Rounding out the top 10 were HRS/Rock Lobster team mates Aaron Kereluk and Rob Evans. Troy Bary (Cal Giant inc) held off the hard charging duo of Keith DeFiebre (Lapierre/Ritchey) and Jason Rahlwes (Fox Racing Shox).

Women's Elite race saw Sarah Kerlin back up last weekend's CCCX win, by making it two in a row with a hard fought two-second victory over Shelley Olds (HRS/Rock Lobster). Kerlin, Olds, and Stella Carey (HRS/Rock Lobster) established a sizeable lead after a few laps on the rest of the field. This threesome was disrupted by a flat tire from Carey costing her any hope of victory. In the final push for the line, the powerful and fit Kerlin out kicked the determined Olds for her second win in the past two CCCX events. Carey held on for third place 41 seconds back after a wheel change. Lauren Constantini (Sycip) collected fourth place on the day just one second ahead of Katrina Baumstieger (Blackmarket).

35+ Master A race saw a incredible five rider shootout for the win. A group of five formed at the front and stayed together until the last lap charge for the line. Last week's winner Henry Kramer (Cal Giant Inc.) made several final lap moves for a break on the group, and each move was brought back. At the line the sprint was claimed by Jesse Scatton (Bulls Eye/East Sac.) for a well disserved win, his first CCCX victory. Kramer finished one second back with Cal Giant Inc. team mate Gannon Myall taking home the bronze medal four seconds down. Chris D'Aluisio(Morgan Stanley/Specialized) while Mark Howland (Blackmarket) finished fifth.
