While the US Grand Prix was visiting the West coast, East coast cross racers monopolized on an opportunity to collect valuable UCI points while sticking closer to home. The North Carolina Cyclocross Series held its second annual North Carolina Grand Prix UCI races at Jackson Park in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Blues skies and pleasant temperatures greeted the racers for a superb day of racing.

Michael Cody (Fior de Frutta) who won day two of last year's Grand Prix boldly stated on the line that he would win again. But it was his teammate, Matt White, who took the hole shot and immediately set a blistering pace. White held the gap to the woods section and was soon joined by Cody at the front. The Fior de Frutta boys were untouchable as the race continued, working together to build a lead that would not be brought back. In third place, Jon Hamblin (RGM- Richard Sachs) dangled off the back of the Fior de Frutta boys for the first few laps, but then had to settle into a lonely ride for the rest of the race. Behind Hamblin, a chase group of about seven men formed. While this group dwindled down to five racers by the last few laps, the spectators turned their attention to the race within the race for 4th place. Since the group had two North Carolina racers (Charlie Storm and Charley Pendry of BTD Inland Construction) the cheers grew louder as Storm attacked out of the woods on the last lap to take fourth in front of Tristan Schouten (Trek-VW). As the race came to a close, the crowd at the finish wondered if Cody and White would duke it out in a sprint, or have a gentlemen's agreement for the finish. Turned out White graciously gave his friend and teammate some much needed UCI points. Cody claimed that he would keep coming back to NC as long as he keeps winning.

Domination was the name of the game for Deidre Winfield's (Velo Bella) performance in the Women's race. Making her first trip to a NC Cyclocross series race, Winfield said, "the course was great with twists and turns and a woods section that made me feel like I was mountain biking again. The course felt powerful and I enjoyed the race." Deciding to stay on the east coast for easier traveling, Winfield put on a clinic on how to win a race from start to finish, taking the hole shot and never looking back. Meanwhile, the battle for second through fifth places played out. Kelly Jones (Sugoi Factory), who made a long voyage from Vancouver, BC, moved into second place by the end of the second lap and remained there until the end. Rounding out the podium in third place was Melanie Swartz (Velo Bella), who loved last year's race so much decided to come again and brought teammates with her.

With over 250 racers across the USCF and UCI fields, one thing could be heard everywhere; North Carolina's Cyclocross scene is growing by leaps and bounds, and can't be overlooked any longer. Other winners of the day were: Madison Sicgrist (Men CX 2-3), Peter Mathern (Men CX 4), Robert Bobrow (Masters 35+), Randy Shields (Masters 45+), Carla Swart (Women CX 3-4), Chase Pilcher (Juniors 10-14), and Cory Rimmer (Juniors 15-18).
