Czechs on top again
Kamil Ausbuher has continued the Czech Republic's run of success in the Cyclo-cross World Cup by winning the second round in Tabor, in his home country. Ausbuher finished solo ahead of Belgians Sven Vanthourenhout (Quick.Step) and Erwin Vervecken (Fidea), which meant that Vanthourenhout took over the lead in the World Cup.
The first serious attack was made by Ausbuher, Vanthourenhout, Sven Nys (Rabobank) and Radomir Simunek Jr. (Author Praha). The latter couldn't handle the pace and dropped off, to be replaced by his teammate Petr Dlask with Tom Vannoppen (MrBookmaker.com-Palmans) chasing not far behind. Vannoppen made contact, but on the third lap Ausbuher attacked, and was able to ride away from the rest of the group.
A group of nine riders formed behind the flying Czech, including Vanthourenhout, Nys, Dlask, Vannoppen, Erwin Vervecken and Bart Wellens (Fidea), Zdenek Mlynár (AC Sparta Praha) and Enrico Franzoi (Saeco). At halfway, Ausbuher had 30 seconds lead and the chasers weren't making much impression. The situation was the same with three laps to go although the chasing group had been reduced to Nys, Vannoppen, Vanthourenhout and Vervecken.
Vanthourenhout attacked towards the end of the lap in pursuit of the leader, and with one lap to go he was just 12 seconds behind. But the Czech kept his cool on the last lap and stayed clear to win by 14 seconds over Vanthourenhout with Vervecken finishing a strong third.
