Boss Cross #1

Kansas City, Kansas, October 17, 2004

By Michael Berning

After a dreary week, a perfect fall afternoon greeted racers as they arrived to kick off the 2004 installment of the longest-running cyclocross series in the Kansas City region, Boss Cross. The first race of the three race series, at Leo Alvey Park, featured a barrier free course from designer/promoter Jeremy Haynes. Racers soon learned that the constant sharp elevation changes and numerous technical sections more than made up for the missing boards.

In the Men's A race Steve Tilford (HRRC/MacClaren) showed again why he is deserving of the world champion's stripes on his jersey. At the gun, Tilford and teammate Shadd Smith (HRRC/MacClaren) set a blistering pace, opening an immediate gap on the rest of the field headed by Micah Moran (Dogfish.) Through mid-race the gap opened as the HRRC/MacClaren duo set ever faster lap times. At the finish, Tilford had gone clear with Smith in second and Lance Sulzen (Team X) coming home third.

The Men's B race was taken by Steve Shope (Midwest Boulevard Racing) who drove a fast moving train off the front of the race in the early laps. The group, which included 2003 Masters silver medalist Dean Parker (Team X) and Chris Hall (Team X) lapped through the majority of the field by the bell lap. At the line, Shope held on for the win with Hall in second and Parker third.

Boss Cross has always enjoyed great sponsor support and this year is no exception with generous support provided by Boulevard Brewing Company, Midwest Cyclery, Voler and Vittoria. Race #2 is October 24 at Clifton Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
