Smith takes lanterne rouge win; Wilhelm grabs series lead

By John Jr Lefler

The Mid-America Cross Cup made it's first stop in Kansas with the Lanterne Rouge Cyclo-cross sunday afternoon in Leavenworth, KS. Shadd Smith (HRRC/Maclaren Racing) made his first appearance of the series riding to an impressive solo win edging second place finisher, Tony Wilhelm (LBC/Highgear) by 0'37. The 1.5 mile circuit on the grounds of Leavenworth High School featured a healthy mix of pavement, grass, gravel and off-camber turns, which stretched the field in the opening lap. While Wilhelm fought to reel in the charging Smith, the battle behind heated up as a group of six riders, including Mark Savery (Scheels/Specialized), Mark Studnicki (Cowtown Cycling), Jesse Petersen (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth), Eric Struckhoff (Free State Racing) and Tyler Carmichael (LBC/Highgear) exchanged blows looking to breakaway for final podium spot. With three laps to go, Savery pulled away from the group with Studnicki in tow. With Studnicki edging Savery in the finale, the race for the fifth was on. Drawing upon his off-road skills, Petersen made a strong to move to shake the rest of the group to take fifth.

In the Women's event, Lincoln rider Marie Neville (Team Kaos Cycling) snatched her second win of the series over Trudie Rebsaman (Wheatland).

The Mid-America Cross Cup resumes Sunday, October 31, 2004 in Lincoln with the third event of the six race series.
