Crossers brave smoke in urban series opener

The story from So Cal this week was certainly the terrible wildfires that consumed over 500,000 acres and more than 1200 homes. Despite the thick pall of smoke and drifting ash hanging over the usually clear skies in Palos Verdes Estates, many crossers decided to take a chance with their lungs and race. Points, you know.

The twisty, constantly turning course was a very slippery and technical mix of cinder running track, gravelly hardpack and super fast barriers. Tailor made for an adept technical rider.

In the Men's A's the first lap was a max attack effort by Emilio Cervantes (Excel Sports) to make local hot shoe Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific / Felt Racing) work a little. Junior standout Perry Paolini (Balance Bar / Devo) bunny hopped the high speed double barrier just at the base of the long run up allowing him to scoot from 3rd to 1st on the opening lap. Just down the course lied another fast barrier that Paolini cleared at full speed. The ensuing battle between Prenzlow and Paolini exploded the field with the duo staying away and battling the rest of the race. The junior aerialist gained a few seconds on each hoppable barrier only to be gradually reeled in by the veteran's horsepower. Prenzlow said "He made me work, that's for sure". The Celo Pacific rider on Felt Racing's lovely new F1X cross bike surged away from Perry at the end to secure the win.

In the Bike Palace Women's A event, Dorothy Wong (Kelly Bikes) survived a mid race pinch flat on one of the many dirt to pavement transitions to chase back and defeat Kelli Roberts (PAA/Merrill Lynch) who temporarily inherited the lead and tried valiantly to fend off the inevitable.

In 35+ saw local cross stalwart Mike McMahon charge back from the tail of the field courtesy of a first lap crash to 2nd. In 30+, Jeff Herring (Kelly Bikes) fought for the win by a small margin over Brian Keate (Velocity) and still had enough left for the A event.
