2003 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series #1

Pioneers Park - Lincoln, NE, October 5, 2003

Schlake wins hot series opener

By John Lefler, Jr

Darin Schlake (Team Kaos) led from the opening lap en route to victory at the curtain-raiser for the Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series on a hot Sunday afternoon at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. The win was sweet redemption for Schlake, who sat out last season with illness.

Schlake opened up his lead early in the 60-minute contest pulling away from teammates Kevin Wilkins, Joe McWilliams and 2002 State Champion, Jay Thomas (LBC/Highgear) in the first barrier stretch and never looking back. As the lead for Schlake grew to nearly 60 seconds, the battle behind for the final five cash prizes settled in with Wilkins and McWilliams working together to fend off a surging Paul Chapman (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth), who finished fourth on the day.

Another 20 seconds back from Chapman, teammate Sam Rosenau held a firm grip on fifth position before an unfortunate misstep in the triple barrier section forced him off his machine. A group of three behind caught Rosenau, including Jim Winklepleck, Mike Koons (Team X) and Mark Savery (Footloose & Fancy) heading into the final two laps.

As the final lap bell was sounded, Schalke, Wilkins, McWilliams and Chapman had solidified their places in the top four with the battle for the final two podium spots to be decided. As the Rosenau group crossed the line heading into the final circuit, the Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth rider attacked catching the other three off guard.

Forcing the tempo, Rosenau split the group with only Koons able to match the acceleration. As the two came into the final stretch of road, Koons got the better of Rosenau with a strong sprint. The 2003 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues Sunday, October 19th at Mahoney Park in Lincoln. For complete information, please visit:http://www.nebraskacycling.org/cyclocross/raceinfo.php
