Cyclo-Cross World Cup #3 - CDM

Saint Wendel, Germany, November 16, 2003

Results    World Cup standings

Two from two for Nys

Belgian Sven Nys has increased his lead in the World Cup competition after taking the second round in St Wendel, Germany, in front of Jiri Pospisil (Czech Republic) and Ben Berden (Belgium). Nys crossed the line 8 seconds in front of second place, confirming his strength as one of the absolute top 'crossers in the world. He is now well on track to take his third World Cup title (after 2000 and 2002), as compatriot and rival Bart Wellens finished outside the points today.

The early pace was - as usual - set by Bart Wellens, Sven Nys and Ben Berden, with Swiss rider Christian Heule and Frenchmen Francis Mourey and John Gadret chasing hard. Richard Groenendaal (Ned) and Jiri Pospisil (Cze) were in the next group, a handful of seconds behind the leaders. Mourey and Heule had to let the front group go, but by halfway the two groups had come back together to form a bunch of eight riders.

World Champion Bart Wellens surprised everyone when he was dropped from the front group. Numb from the cold, he couldn't unclip from his pedals in time and hit a barrier. He ran without his bike for a short while, but then abandoned the race.

In front, Nys attacked and only Pospisil could follow him, staying on the Belgian's wheel while the other riders fell back. The chase group contained Petr Dlask (Cze), Ben Berden, Erwin Vervecken (Bel) and Richard Groenendaal, but there was no catching the two leaders. With two laps to go, Nys attacked and got rid of Pospisil, and was able to cruise across the line with a comfortable lead. Ben Berden took third, while John Gadret beat compatriot Francis Mourey for fourth place.
