Vergegear.com Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Series

October-November 2003

Trebon and Schauer Claim Top Honors

The 2003 Vergegear.com Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Series has come to a close and with that, the crowning of several new champions.

In the Elite Men's class, Ryan Trebon (Kona) raced only five of the ten races in the series but his three wins and two second place finishes were enough to lock up the 2003 Vergegear.com title by week eight. His wins included two UCI races where he bested the likes of Todd Wells (Mongoose/Hyundai), Andy Jacques-Mayne (Clif Bar) and Jackson Stewart (Clif Bar). Behind Trebon, two teammates battled for second place with the victory going to Ryan Leech (Fort/GPOA). His teammate and current National Masters Champion, Gunnar Shogren, took third. Greg Wittwer (LSV/Trek) took the 2003 title for U-23 and also pulled off a top ten Elite ranking by placing eighth. The second placed U-23 rider, Joey Thompson (Balance Bar/Devo, also placed tenth in the Elite rankings. Andrew Wulfkuhle (Wissahickon) finished in third place in the U-23 series.

After back to back wins in 2001 and 2002 by Josie Shew (First State Velo Sport), a new champion was crowned this year in the Elite Women's field. Fort/GPOA's Betsy Schauer raced her first full season of 'cross and finished it on top of the points list. Amber Itle (Wissahickon), who missed two series races, finished second. Itle was steadily closing the gap to Schauer but ran out of races before she could overtake her.
Another Wissahickon rider, Lisa Most, moved up a few spots over the final two weekends and ended her season ranked third. Sarah Uhl (Saturn) was the top ranked U-23 rider for 2003, followed by Caitlyn Tuel (Sobe/Cannondale) and Erica Aller (Fuji).

Eric Schlauch (Somerset Wheelmen) came out on top of the Masters 35+ class. Schlauch was tied with Rob Hacker (Lite Bites) heading into the last race but with Hacker missing in action due to illness, Schlauch walked away with the title. The 2003 title must be extra-sweet to Schlauch who was leading going into the 2002 final but forfeited his chance at the title when he skipped the last race because of a previous commitment. Hacker held onto second place in the 2003 series and Mike Hebe (Monex) placed third.

Sami Fournier (Velo Bella) claimed the title in the Women's Masters 35+ class. Tammy Ebersole (Evolution Racing/IF) placed second and Michelle Suplick (Wissahickon) finished third.

Fred Wittwer(Charlottesville Racing) won his second consecutive title in the Master's 45+ category. Leo Pizzini (First State Velo Sport) and Randall Root (Snow Valley) rounded out the top three.

Gonzalo Escobar (Squadra Coppi) won the Junior's title beating out Syd Lea (Fuji) who finished second and Jamey Driscoll (GMBC) who finished third.

Jesse Semanchik (First State Velo Sport) came into the last race with a slight lead over Wade Hess (Beacon Cycling) but needed a strong finish to maintain his lead in the Men's B class. He succeeded in wrapping up the title with a second place finish at Blue Diamond Park. Hess finished the series ranked second and Chris Mayhew (Fort/GPOA) took third.

Thirteen year old Nina Santiago (Liberty Cycle) won the Women's B title by benefit of her consistent riding week after week. Krista Schultz (Tri Speed) rode to a second place finish and Tracy Lea (Fuji) finished third.

Brian Webster (SVVC) scored the Men's C class title with Andrew Jakubowitch (Unattached) placing second and David Stauffer (Cycle Works) placing third.

The team title was won by Team Wissahickon with Team Fuji and Fort/GPOA finishing second and third respectively.
