Wells, Lloyd, Hosey take Wet CCCP Victories

Todd Wells got back on the winning track Sunday at the 4th Round of the Bay Area Super Prestige Series, scoring his 4th UCI victory of the season on the Beach course at Coyote Point. For Rachel Lloyd it was her first victory over the Clif Bar team that has systematically controlled Lloyd all season - until the Beach course reduced their dry speed advantage when running was the advantage Lloyd brought to the event. And for Mike Hosey a mechanical-free event earned his first UCI win of the season in the Junior Elite race.

Three weeks ago at Coyote Point Wells, Travis Brown, Marc Gullickson and Andy Jacques-Maynes had a shoot-out sprint for the line at a dry course and Brown punched the accelerator for the win. Sunday's race course was wet from the start and heavy going through many sections of the 3.3 km circuit. Wells began to distance himself from the Clif Bar team by the 3rd of 8 laps. The fabled "Ritchey Walk on the Beach", a 50 yard section bordering San Francisco Bay, proved to be the undoing of Andy Jacques-Mayne when he stumbled attempting a flying landing onto the beach. OLN commentator Richard Fries had the crowd primed and waiting for Wells on each lap to leap and plant his bike perfectly onto the wet sand and that acrobatic ability gave Wells the cushion needed to fend off the 2 Northern Californians who shut Wells out last weekend on the East Coast at Highland Park and Amherst. The Kona team completed the podium with Erik Tonkin and Dale Knapp just a minute off Wells finish. And after a sizzling mid-season where he took 3 UCI victories, Ryan Trebon retired at mid race and is recharging the batteries for the next 2 weeks before Nationals in Portland.

At the first 3 Bay Area Super Prestige events the script was unchanged - Clif Bar's Carmen D'Aluisio and Gina Hall would alternate attacking Ritchey's Rachel Lloyd on the fast, dry courses until Lloyd cracked and whichever Cliffie was leading would solo to victory. With the Pacific winter storm soaking the eucalyptus forests and the "Ritchey Walk on the Beach", suddenly the tide had turned - literally. The Bay winter high tide was lapping near the edge of the fence bordering the beach and Lloyd discovered a circuit that matched her running skills. Dismounting and jumping onto the sand, Lloyd would sprint down the 50 yard sandpit and extend her lead each lap and this time it was Clif Bar taking the consolation places.

Sacramento's Adam Switters is currently the 4th ranked Elite Junior in the country and eagerly awaiting Portland and a chance to earn a spot on the World's team but a streaking Mike Hosey from Cotati interrupted his march to Pont-Chateau. On a day that saw Switters twice use the double pits for service and charge back to challenge for the win, Hosey calmly maintained his rhythm on the Beach, Bianchi Barricades, and Cannondale Canyon's descent through the forest to score his first UCI victory of the season. Both Juniors will now prepare for Nationals where they'll meet US leaders Tucker Thomas, Jamey Driscoll, and Konrad Lebas in predicable Northwest conditions - wet and heavy - just like Coyote Point.

Many of the 300 competitors remained for the final Elite podium ceremonies where Elite winners took home literal bags of gold with their wins - and then Wells was asked to perform 1 final act - select the winning raffle ticket for the Pilarcitos Cyclesports "World Championship vacation". Nick Llewellyn from Santa Cruz will probably be getting lots of calls now from long lost pals who would like to carry his bags on the 5-day trip to Pont-Chateau and the Worlds.
