Dlask storms to fourth national title

By Sam Alison

Louny, about 50km north east of Prague, put on some icy weather and a novel course for the 54th Czech national cyclocross championships. The snow dusted course was set around an outdoor concrete velodrome, the riders completing a loop of the infield on each lap. One run up tackled the banking of the 'drome (with the help of some temporary wooden steps), the other a more natural style. The combination of no barriers (an increasingly common feature on top level 'cross courses) and a fairly open course made for a high average speed.

All the top Czech riders were out in bitter -4 degree conditions at the race start, the elite and U23 fields being combined. Having spent the previous season struggling with injury, the 2001 World's silver medalist Dlask stated before the race he was keen to make an impression in the event he had won thrice before.

By half way through the first lap Dlask and team-mate Martin Bina had gone off the front, they established a five second advantage over the chasers by the end of the first lap. This gap grew over the next few laps as no determined attempts to get across materialised. By mid-way through the race, the chasing group of seven (Jezek, Pospisil, Trunschka, Mudroch, Simunek, Stybar and Tichy) were 45 seconds adrift.

Bina had spent the whole race sheltered in the wake of Dlask's enormous 197cm frame. Dlask was motoring along and it seemed if Bina were able to stay on his wheel, he may conserve enough energy to get over the finish line first. This wasn't really necessary, even if it had been possible, as Bina was still riding in the U23 category he took out last year. As it was, Bina wasn't able to hold Dlask's relentless tempo, and a gap appeared between the two by lap 10.

It was on this lap that the revelation of the season, Vaclav Jezek, pulled away from the chasers to stake his claim for the silver medal. Once he'd established this buffer, he seemed to realise he wouldn't catch Dlask, who had well over a minute by this stage, and there was no point in chasing the young Bina.

In the final laps the competition among the chasers was fierce, with last year's champion Jiri Pospisil eventually managing to get a break. The top placings stayed this way to the line, which meant the newly formed Czech super team Author - Praha would fill the podium.

Bina had an unassailable lead for the win in the U23s, with Radomir Simunek Jr (son of cross legend Simunek Sr) coming in for second in the category and 8th overall. Zdenek Stybar, had an excellent and surprising ride, as the 18 year old came in for 3rd, certainly a prospect for the future.
