Bend Cyclocross Series #6

Bend, Oregon, December 7, 2003

By Brad Cockman

Race Promoter Brad Cockman laid-out a faster, flatter course than in weeks previous, preparing area riders for the upcoming US National Championships in Portland, Oregon, December 12-14. A steep, sandy run-up and a "mini-monolith" were more or less the only obstacles thrown in to slow the riders down.

Not slowing down at all after two Ironman competition's in the past couple of months was re-relocated (used to live here, moved, moved back) Bend resident Steve Larsen. After a blazing first lap prime-winning pace set by Sunnyside's Mike Schindler, Larsen steadily moved his way past the other racers to take over the lead on lap four. Larsen used his time-trial fitness on the long pavement section through Broken Top to distance himself from Schindler and take the win. Schindler crossed the line less than a minute behind, followed by the Ivory Warrior, Mike Martin of Compass Commercial.

After a less than stellar showing by the C group, the Category B riders toed the line. Sunnyside's Jim Juenger just loves HammerGel, so he punished the field on the first lap to ensure he won the banana jug being given away. He was closely followed by Sunnyside's Don Leet who pre-race decided he was going to start fast and finish slow. Don's been racing for a few years and knows how to prepare for National events! Coming through in third position was eventual race leader and Nancy P's baker Steve Morse of Sunnyside. Steve used his experience, smoothness and baking ability up the run-ups to gain the lead and gradually distanced himself from Dan Moeller of Portland's Team S&M, who ended up 2nd. Rounding out the podium was Sunnyside's Juenger.

The final points are being tabulated and overall prizes will be available at Sunnyside Sports after Natz. A huge thanks to sponsors Kent Cramer of Cramer's Mortgage Services, Hammer Nutrition, American Licorice and the cross-aholics at Sunnyside Sports!
