Hammond takes High Road's first win

Roger Hammond took Team High Road's first ever victory when he won the British 'cross championship Sunday. He also debuted the team's new black kit when he beat mountain biker Liam Killeen. Hammond also beat Killeen in the championships on the same course in 2006.

Paul Oldham took the early lead, but Hammond moved up to the front by the middle of the second lap. Killeen stayed with him and by the fourth lap, the two were on their own. The mountain biker was counting on his expertise in the technical sections, and in fact took over the lead, threatening to drop Hammond. However, Hammond was never in serious danger of being dropped.

On the last lap, Hammond took over the lead again and was able to with the sprint for his record-breaking fourth title. Killen was second, and Oldham finished third, less than 20 seconds down.

A field of over 90 elite riders got off to a fast start on the tarmac section of Sutton Park near Birmingham.
Pre-race favourite Roger Hammond had a slow start and was in 10th position at the end of the first lap as the early leaders strung out the field.
World class fell runner and occasional cyclist Rob Jebb (Wheelbase) had a good start but suffered on the technical sections losing ground on the leaders.

With the early leaders quickly fading ex Junior World Cross Champion Roger Hammond shows his class by taking the lead and opening a gap of about 20 seconds.
Paul Oldham (Hope Factory Racing) and Daniel Booth (Pedal Power) lead the chase for Hammond.
MTB star Liam Killeen (BC Private member) finally gets warmed up and begins to move through the field in pursuit of the leaders.
Science in Sports duo Dave Collins and Ian Wilkinson join forces working together to limit the damage caused by Hammond.
Hammond floated across the course at Sutton Park with consumate ease, riding sections that others struggled with.
Liam Killeen was now only a few seconds behind Hammond and they would soon be sharing the lead.
Killeen catches Hammond and rides straight past, giving a quick backward glance to see if Hammond has responded.
Paul Oldham is now only 10 seconds behind the leaders, but once Hammond and Killeen join forces they up the pace and move ahead.
Into the wooded section on the final lap and Killeen leads, as they emerge from the woods Hammond regains the front position and the scene is set for a two man sprint.
On the line and Roger Hammond snatches victory from a disappointed Liam Killeen.
Hammond explains to commentator Hugh Porter that the new team kit is the winter version for training, a new summer race strip will be un-veiled later in the spring.
