One man show from 'Prince Albert' concludes the season

By Brecht Decaluwé

The strongest rider at the end of the cyclo-cross season is clearly Niels Albert. In the last race of the season on the dry 2.8-kilometre long sand parcours, the 23 year-old copied his race from last year by giving a demonstration. Albert jumped away from the pack after less than two laps and he ended his solo after more than eight laps in an impressive gritting style.

"It was the same course like last year and I was very motivated for this last 'cross race of the season; apparently I'm in super form," Albert stated.

With his 18th victory of the season the U23 World Champion has shown that he will become a real threat for the old guard next season, when he will be racing among the elite riders all the time, whereas he was still an U23 rider this season. "The season is not ending too soon for me," Albert played down the feeling that he would be able to continue this series of wins for a while, "because for me it's almost over as well. From now on I'll focus on building a house," Albert smiled. When asked about his aspirations for next year the young Belgian pointed out that he wants the overall win in a regularity competition. "Next year I'll go for the overall victory in a Series – preferably the GvA-trophy – but then I'll need a strong build-up to the new season," Albert warned his older rivals.

In the women's race Daphny Van Den Brand had a small margin over her compatriot Reza Hormes-Ravenstijn, but once the race got under way there was no question about the eventual winner. Van Den Brand dominated the race, just as Niels Albert did in the men's race. Behind her the battle for second place was exciting and eventually it was Saskia Elemans who grabbed second place with a strong last lap in which she suddenly could've been a threat for the winner.

The sprint for third place was won by the talented Belgian Sanne Cant.

"With this GvA-trophy, women's cycling gets more attention," Van Den Brand said after the race, pointing out what it's all about for her. "Hopefully we will have more races next year although there will have to be more women at the start. Today, there were only 21 riders but that's because the Worlds are over and some are already focusing on MTB or the road, because as a woman you can't live from cyclo-cross alone."

Back to the men's race where behind Albert an exciting battle was going on between the fresh World Champion Lars Boom and the experienced Belgian Bart Wellens. Together they couldn't get back to Albert, but they managed to withstand the comeback from the other chasers. Eventually, it came down to an exciting sprint on the runway in Oostmalle, and it was won by the Belgian.

"There were certainly no more than five centimetres between the two of us," Wellens described how tight the sprint was. "We were both at the end of our forces, but I wanted to do all I could to finish second and I'm delighted that I could accomplish that goal after the blow I received by not participating in Baal. It's fantastic I could finish second in the GC after all."

When asked whether there was something possible against Albert, Wellens looked up with a frown. "I saw it when he jumped away and realised he was gone. Every lap he gained 10" while we went full on behind him; right now he's superman," Wellens praised his young compatriot.

World Champion Boom was fed up by the lost sprint although he was happy with his overall performance in the last race of the season. "My bike wasn't set-up for a sprint so I'm annoyed with that, but I'm very satisfied with a podium result," Boom said.

The young Dutch champion agreed that he didn't live up to the expectations after the World Championships in Treviso by skipping his race starts or performing poorly in the first weeks after his win. "After the Worlds my life was [busy] and I couldn't find a moment of rest," Boom explained why it took him awhile before he got back to a normal level. "Today, I was very motivated to secure my fourth place in the GC of the GvA-trophy."

The 'Cannibal' of cyclo-cross had some quiet weeks recently and once again he couldn't perform as good as he would want to. After taking a good start, Sven Nys was blown back in the bunch behind the first three riders and eventually recovered two laps before the finish to claim a decent fourth place.

It didn't matter too much for Nys, as he was already sure that the overall victory in the GvA-trophy was his. "I started with the goal to follow the leaders, but I was sent into a state like so many times during the last few weeks," the UCI leader explained. "I had to recovery from that for three to four laps before I could start thinking about accelerating again. There's nothing left in my tank and purely on character I managed to become fourth today. You can't win every race, I'm only human after all," Nys admitted although it must be said that he – once again – dominated the season.

The Belgian claimed his fifth overall victory in the GvA-trophy, his eighth victory in the Superprestige Series and is once again UCI leader at the end of the season.

In the overall classification of the GvA-trophy Nys precedes his arch rival Bart Wellens by a huge margin. The Fidea-rider managed to stay ahead of his Czech team-mate Zdenek Stybar and world champion Lars Boom.

As announced earlier there was no Jonathan Page at the start. Klaas Vantornout – who did receive a contested starting contract – took a day off and finished in 15th position, just behind the U23 Belgian champion Tom Meeusen.

How it unfolded

84 riders took the start on the airfield in Oostmalle and it was World Champion Lars Boom who showed the others his rear wheel. He was followed by Sven Nys, Niels Albert and Erwin Vervecken. The sand blew up and unsurprisingly some riders went down halfway the huge bunch, as the visibility was nihil. Boom kept leading through the forest, but when the riders exited Nys jumped to the front. The UCI leader took a nice gap and team-mate Boom played team tactics leading the bunch slowly through the sharp corners on the 2.8-kilometre course.

After one lap, Nys had a gap of 3" on Boom and Albert. Vervecken, Aernouts, Wellens, Peeters, Pauwels, Stybar, Sven Vanthourenhout and Groenendaal. Nys was caught early on in the second lap while Wellens brought the chasers back in touch with the leaders. In the forest, Albert took over from Nys and the young Belgian increased the tempo. The big group was stretched out and Nys had to work hard to stay on his co-citizen's wheel. At the pit-zone Nys decided that Albert was riding too quick for him and he dropped back, allowing Boom to the lead in the chase. Only Wellens was still in touch with these two riders, who were already 6" behind Albert. The main group followed at 16" from the leader. Albert took the three bonus points at the intermediate sprint after two laps, ahead of a hard-sprinting Boom (2) and Wellens (1); Nys was dropped by the sprint from Boom.

Wellens took the initiative with Boom on his wheel, but it would be a very hard job to get back to the unleashed Palmans-rider in front. Halfway through the third lap, Albert had a gap of 10" on Wellens/Boom, while Nys was caught by the group that was led by Czech Champion Stybar. By the end of the third lap – with seven laps to go – the duo behind Albert was chasing at 14", and the main chasing group was riding 26" behind the leader.

Albert was riding at least two km/h quicker than his rivals, and by the end of the fourth lap his lead grew up to 21". With six laps to go, Albert had ridden the quickest lap of the race, but the duo behind him didn't give up the fight. Fourteen riders gathered behind the first three riders and none of these men had aspirations left for a podium result.

Wellens showed more skill in the sand as Boom was forced to step off the bike during the fifth lap, nevertheless the World Champion managed to crawl back to Wellens' wheel. Meanwhile, Albert continued to go faster and this lap was his fastest of the day with 5'37". Nys was dropped back into a group with Belgian U23 Champion Tom Meeusen at more than a minute from the leader. The 20 year-old Fidea-rider was clearly enjoying his time out there, although it was certain that he was digging deeper than Nys to be in this group.

The sixth lap was a copy of the previous lap with diesel Albert again going a little quicker (5'36") and the others going a little slower with the gap growing up to 37" on Boom and Wellens, who worked well together to stay ahead of the chasers as they probably felt that winning was impossible against 'Prince Albert'. Behind the first three riders, everything came back together under impulse from Nys; Thijs Al led this big group at 1'10" from the leader.

During the seventh lap, Al got away with Groenendaal and Aernouts in search of the fourth place. Vervecken led the chase on these three riders. Boom made a mistake in the forest, allowing Wellens back to the lead and when the World Champion got stuck in the sand outside the forest the Belgian was gone. Boom switched bikes and with two laps to go the Dutch man had to make up more than 6" on Wellens. On the pavement at the start-finish line Boom steamed back to Wellens' wheel in no time – making up for an exciting battle at 47" from Albert.

Nys took the lead in the main chasing group and some riders had to realise that the UCI leader had saved his energy for the last two laps while they lost their energy halfway in the race with futile attacks. Meanwhile in front, Albert gritted his teeth and crossed the finish line to hit the final lap. Boom and Wellens followed at 54" from Albert; Nys jumped away from the chasers at 1'25" where Vervecken tried to stay in touch with the UCI leader.

Boom launched a power-lap in an effort to kill Wellens before the actual sprint, but the experienced Belgian stood tall. Just before hitting the final straight Wellens talked with Boom and possibly explained him that he needed a second place in the race for the second place in the GC of the GvA-trophy. In a tight sprint Wellens beat world champion Boom to become the best of the rest behind the untouchable winner Niels Albert. Nys kept his lead over the main chasing group to claim fourth ahead of Vervecken who held off Sven Vanthourenhout, Pauwels, Stybar, Aernouts and Groenendaal.
