Wissahickon Cross - C2Philadelphia, USA, October 21, 2007Powers' takes another turn at victoryBy Kirsten Robbins in Ludwig's Corner, Pennsylvania Jeremy Powers (Cyclocrossworld) added a second UCI win to his collection of podiums in the Wissahikon Cyclo-Cross race, but this time around Powers won from the get-go after attacking the field on the first lap and increasing his lead over team-mate Tim Johnson and Chris Jones (Nerac) for a solo victory. "I just went as hard as I could and got a little gap and luckily Tim was back there patrolling," said Powers, with regards to a course that wouldn't normally suit him in the past. "I've really wanted to improve in all conditions because in the past I suffered on courses like this that are flat," he added. "Today was hot and it was fast with sections that may not have suited me before, so that makes me really excited to have done well here. I've been working with my coach a lot, not just on specific cross training, but also doing regular training miles. I've stayed very consistent each week and I hope that I can hold on to that and continue to improve." The 60-minute race started in much the same fashion as the previous day's cyclo-cross race in Granogue, with Johnson fleeing from his select front group, leaving Barry Wicks (Kona) in a vulnerable position for Powers to take the advantage. In a role reversal, Powers took the first opportunity to escape the front group that included Johnson, Wicks, Jones and Jesse Anthony (Jamis). "Yesterday Tim was the best and I hope that he didn't hold back today," said Powers, in regards to his team-mate's chase from behind. "We race under the same banner and for the same team but we also race out there to see who's best." Powers opened up a sizable lead on the flat straight aways, climbing the run up over the barriers and the ride around the circle of death, but attributed much of his success to his flawless equipment. "I prefer to jump over the barriers because it's much faster and much more efficient for me," said Powers. "I don't really love running so I think I excelled on the areas of the course where there were a lot of fast turns. Everything I have is from Cyclocrossworld all the way down to the tyres, which makes a huge difference in performance on the various courses." Once his team-mate's gap was too big to close, Johnson took a crack at separating himself from Wicks and shortly after Jones followed. For the remaining laps Powers, Johnson and Jones rode equal intervals of time from one another, while Wicks, the marquee rider, faded behind and found himself in a heated sprint with Troy Wells for fourth. Jones has landed on the podium in nearly every race he has entered, and since this is his first cyclo-cross season admits that he is hoping to figure out what his 'style' is before December's nationals. "Those guys were riding really strong and I just couldn't catch them, with the heat it seemed so hard," said Jones. "We were all staying the same distance apart, sort of like a Time Trial. I don't know my style yet - I'm still working that out. "On the road I'm considered a climber and today was kind of a flat course so I think the longer straight away helped me out, whereas those guys are always faster than me in the technical areas like the sand pits," added Jones. "I'm excited to be there following guys like Tim and Jeremy because I'm learning a lot by doing it. They are clearly stronger than me but nationals is still two months away so I've got some time to improve." Both Powers and Johnson are headed to Europe in December to tackle a season of cyclo-cross. Powers, who had spent a season racing in Europe during 2005, is looking forward to going back as a stronger and more developed athlete. Johnson on the other hand noted some unfinished business that needed to be taken care of overseas. "My body's starting to catch up with what my mind thinks it can do," said Johnson. "The last time I did worlds was in 2002 and I didn't go back because of the road seasons. I've qualified for the worlds team in the last two years but decided not to go. "The success that Jonathan Page has been great to watch along with my wife Lyne, whose gone back over to race worlds, they've both given me a motivation to go back this year," he added. "It's a combination of my racing working out really well along with some unfinished business over there." Barnholt's deja-vuKerry Barnholt (Tokyo Joes/VanDessel) made it look easy when she steadfastly wound her way through the twists and turns on the Wissahickon circuit, at speeds that no other rider could match. The Boulder native took her second solo UCI win as many days while Rebecca Wellons (Ridley Factory Team) claimed second place after she won a two up sprint against Megan Monroe (BMC/Sport Garage). "It was a lot more power oriented today with smooth sections and lots of turns," said Barnholt. "It helped to be a good bike handler because I stayed with the girls for the first lap but realised I could go through the corners a little bit faster." Barnholt took 15th place at the 2007 world cyclo-cross championships in Hoogleide-Gits, Belgium - her first project with the US national cross team. While Barnholt admits to keeping cyclo-cross more fun than serious, she has her eyes set on competing in another world championship event. "I would rather be racing with people to push me to get faster, but I also like being able to take my own lines," she explained. "The USGP races will be a lot more competition and a whole different ball game." Second placed Wellons tried to close in on Barnholt's gap and found her self in good company when Monroe bridged across to her. "I ride a lot of crits all summer so this course suited me in that it is fast," said Wellons. "I've been working hard on my technical game and feel that I've made a lot of progress in that area. I was happy that Monroe bridged up to me because it's a little windy and such a grind. It was so much better psychologically to have someone to ride with." Wellons and Monroe took turns fighting the strong winds, rotating around each other until the final run up to the finish line. "I was right where I wanted to be, on her wheel through the last corner," said Wellons regarding the sprint. "We started to pick it up a little and I stayed patient and passed her part way up the road to the finish."
