Muckenthaler 'cross kicks off SoCal season

Wind Burn, chapped lips and racing were the elements to the Southern California's Premier Cyclocross Series race #2! Dry gale-force winds attacked the course in gusts reaching up to forty miles per hour. Now, with two races finished and ten more to go, the competition is really starting to heat up.

The event was held at hilly Veterans' Memorial Park in Sylmar, California and the course was alive. The weather could have been warmer, but it was in the 80s for race number two. The wind changed things a tad by kicking up dust and blowing a few junior racers off their bikes. Besides the torturous winds, the racing was awesome, yet again.

This more technical course was quick, even with the sandy climbs, run-up and left sweeping double barrier dismount, which made it more enjoyable for all, even for those who came simply to watch. It was impressive examining the different lines racers took into each of these technical areas and in the twisting turns on the far-end of the course. A couple racers such as Craig Savage in the Men's Elite decided to bunny-hop the barriers while a few others just barreled into them. One of the better crashes of the day was during the Men's 3-4 race, a racer caught the front tire of his bike on a barrier as he ran through the section, causing him to spin around and lose his bike. The course designers/racers of Team Bear Claw (www.teambearclaw.com) should be rewarded for such a fantastic course design.

This week it was nice to see some more newcomers, from the road scene making their way to the race like Bobby Lea of Toyota United, racing cross the day after winning the Elite National Track Championship in the Madison and Rachel O'Connell of UCI Tradeteam: Cheerwine in the Elite races. In Women's Elite, it was Coryn Rivera of Velo Club La Grange Westwood who dominated this week.

It was a close race with three women holding together. It could have been an even closer finish if it were not for an unfortunate crash by Melodie Metzger (Team California Giant Cycling) in the last few turns where Carolyn Popovic (Team C.I.C.L.E) managed to save herself by rolling over Melodie and trying to sprint after young Coryn as she took off from the lead group, utilizing the crash to her advantage.

The Men's Elite was taken again by the power of Brent Prenzlow of the Alan Factory Team. It was a fleeting start with the pack close together, but just like last week Prenzlow began to creep away from the lead group to take the win. It should not go unmentioned that Mark Noble (Time Factory Team) and Fritz Bottger (Team Bear Claw) put out a grand attempt to catch Prenzlow by moving their way through the pack, creating their own gap between the lead group but it was Mark Noble who continued the attack spacing himself even from Bottger to capture second.
