Gran Prix of Gloucester 2, Gloucester, MA - C2Gloucester, MA, USA, October 14, 20072006 Results Results Past winners Anthony takes round twoBy Kirsten Robbins in Gloucester, Massachusetts The cyclo-cross excitement continued during round two of the Gran Prix of Gloucester where the fans returned to see their two local talents, Jesse Anthony (Jamis) and Tim Johnson (Cannondale/Leer/Cyclocrossworld), along with newcomer Chris Jones (Nerac) battle for victory on the grassy speedway. Rounding onto the pavement with two hundred metres to go, it looked like Johnson might have been able to sew up the win after his lengthy all-race chase to get back to the leaders from an accident on the first lap. But Anthony, who led the race from early on with Jones, held a sliver of a gap to the line, taking his first UCI cyclo-cross victory in front of his hometown support. "It feels so good to win because this is the first UCI 'cross race I've ever won and to have it be in Gloucester, my hometown, with all my friends and family watching was fantastic," said Anthony with a crowd standing by, waiting to congratulate him. "The crowds here were unbelievable, the best crowds all year and there are so many people I know." Two time German national champion Malte Urban (Team Focus) blasted out of the gates with Matt Shriver (Jittery Joes) and Davide Frattini (Colavita/Sutter Home) in tow. They held a gap for three laps until Matt White (Fiordifrutta), Jones and Anthony successfully bridged across. By the end of the third lap Jones and Anthony had built a sizeable lead on the field that only Johnson's sheer determination could close towards the end of the race. "Chris and Jesse were off the front for a reason," said Johnson with regards to his efforts to connect the dots back up to the front. "They were winning the race and I was just trying to dig my way back up. I was focused on trying to get them. It was really sad to come up the run up and see Chris with a flat because he had such a great race until then. From then on it was just about chasing down my training partner, Jesse. But I was thinking that if I get beat and I can't do it than it's nice to see Jesse win because he grew up doing the kids races around the gazebo so for him to win the big boy's race is huge." Jones, in his first cyclo-cross season, showed gumption when he initiated the breakaway and then took a stab at the victory with three laps to go, attacking his breakaway companion on the steep run up going over the barriers. "Jesse bridged up to me and he was riding really strong," said Jones. "We were going back and forth for a long time until I decided to go for it with three laps to go. He caught up to me with two laps to go but on the last lap I attacked again, hit a rock and got a flat so they both passed me there. At that point I kind of gave up an accepted third place because Tim was coming up on us so fast that I knew I probably wouldn't have been able to catch him." The race win could have gone to any of the three riders but a bad roll of the dice took Jones out with a flat tire on route to the finish. Anthony noted that though he and Jones were pushing as hard as they could, he saved his last efforts for when it counted the most. "He was working really well and I think he was stronger than me for a little while but he might have attacked to early with three laps to go," said Anthony. "When he attacked I was definitely in the 'hurt locker' and I wasn't faking it; he put the screws down. I tried to keep him as close as possible and with the crowd cheering me on I dug pretty deep today. We couldn't play too many games in the end because Tim was coming up on us really strong. Chris had already played his card with three laps to go and I had mine left for the finish."
Inevitably BessetteLyne Bessette (Cyclocrossworld) stalled on her inevitable victory to give the field a fighting chance during the second Gran Prix of Gloucester's. The race behind Bessette came down to a courageous effort from Anna Milkowski (Velo Bella) who attacked her race companion Natasha Elliott (Stevens Cross) on the last lap and barely held off the chase in a sprint to the line. The race winner commented on her decision to sit in the field for the first two laps as being helpful for the field in the long run. "I decided to race with the girls for a little bit because when I don't start that fast, I don't kill them that much," said Bessette. "Anna had a better race today because she didn't try to bridge across. I really wanted to give them a chance to have a better race instead of just blowing it apart. We all settled into the race and then when I took off they knew they couldn't actually close that so they all had a better race in their group." A group of seven riders settled into a rhythm that included Bessette, Milkowski and Elliott along with Maureen Bruno Roy (Independent Fabrications), Megan Elliott (Unattached), Megan Monroe (BMC-Sport Garage) and Rebecca Wellons (Ridley Factory Team). Bessette sat in second wheel while the others took turns driving the race from the front and establishing a gap on the rest of the field. But once Bessette set sail out of the sand pit on the third lap, there was no bringing her back. Milkowski put in a brave effort to bring back Bessette on the previous day's race and she decided to continue her efforts at the very least to maintain Bessette's deja-vu lead the second time around because, after all, it is a race. "I feel like it is still a good idea to race against Lyne because you'll never get better if you don't," said Milkowski. "I was also disappointed yesterday that I blew so spectacularly. Yesterday she just rode off the front and we all just let her go. So, I think there was a concession for the most part that she was going to win again today. Though that is a fairly reasonable conclusion, I still believe it's good to fight some times. Today she was kind of riding with us after she had just finished the men's race, which was a really good effort in itself." Milkowski and Elliott separated themselves from the field on the fourth lap while Bruno Roy, Anis, Elliott and Monroe followed in their pursuit. Milkowski found Elliott's weak points to be her own strengths and attacked several times through the sand pit and down the technical descents until Elliott could not hold on any longer. "I've been racing cyclo-cross for a long time and I used to be technically horrible so by virtue of just doing it a lot I am getting better," Milkowski said, explaining her technical savvyness. "I had an advantage on Natasha by going first through the sand because it forced her to close a little gap every time coming out of the sand pit plus she is newer in the sport and technical skill take time to improve." "I knew she had a lot of horsepower on the flats but that I was faster on the downhills," added Milkowski. "I didn't want to leave it to the very end so I opened a gap after the barriers on the last lap. I wasn't at all sure that I was going to be able to hold her off."
