Bay Area Super Prestige #4 - NESan Francisco, California, USA, November 25, 2007Andy is back at Golden Gate ParkThe California Giant Berry team had great reasons to celebrate at the opening round of the 2007 Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclocross series in October. Andy Jacques-Maynes and Justin Robinson pulled off a 1-2 finish over Northern California arch rivals from HRS-Rock Lobster but later in the afternoon all of those celebrations developed a bitter taste. Andy re-injured his just healed collarbone in a fall later that day while trail running on the circuit. During the Memorial Day criterium in May Jacques-Maynes had clobbered a lightpole in the final turn of the final lap of the race in Morgan Hill and was airlifted from the site. After a summer-long recuperation he was finally back on the bike with a vengeance and preparing for the full 'cross season when his fall and winter plans had to be modified again to face more surgery and more healing. But the wait is over Andy got his doctor's permission to blast off again in Sunday's 4th round of the Bay Area Super Prestige Series in Golden Gate Park and he did not disappoint his legions of Jacques-Mayniacs. From lap one, the race pitted Northern California's major contenders in a clash for bragging rights. Jacques-Maynes and series leader and fellow Berry Justin Robinson plus the lone member of a strong HRS-Rock Lobster squad Josh Snead created the first gap of the day in the first of their 10 laps on the loose forest paths in San Francisco's crown jewel. The trio came unglued after Robinson tried to hop the double barricades and clipped the front plank. When he brushed the weeds off his jersey Andy had already reached the checkout stand by himself and was gone for the day. Robinson was later joined by #2 on the HRS squadra David Wyandt so now he had two of the lime green jerseys to worry about. For the final half of the race it was barrage after barrage, attack and counter, cover and jump and by the final emergence from the forest onto the paved finish line, HRS had called on another member of the reserves, Aaron O'Dell, to launch the finale. But it was Robinson all the way up the final 125 yards, holding off Wyandt by a bike length for second, and green jersies everywhere else. On the root-bound Ritchey Run-up, a tradition was created in 2005 when the USGP season came to town, dollar bills temptingly placed on the edge of the course by SF fans for acrobatic and voracious riders to try and snag. Absolutely nothing moved Jacques-Maynes, Robinson, Snead, Wyandt, or O'Dell from their assigned tasks, not even 20's in the long necks! Formidable. A couple of especially noteworthy performances were produced by U18 riders from Sacramento Cody Kaiser and Jeremy Ferguson.15 year-old Kaiser hung with the leaders for the first three laps and finished with an eventual 20th place but never lapped by the resurgent Jacques-Maynes. 16 year-old Ferguson had his best race of the season finishing sixth overall with a great morale booster for this weekend's mud bath finale in Portland's U18 USGP of 'Cross. On the opposite end of the age spectrum, the park drew another couple of NorCal legends to the scene. 4-time US Champ Don Myrah took his near 20 year old steel Guerciotti out of storage and made top 20 while Gary Fisher rode the latest version of his bike that started the MTB evolution. Rachel Lloyd bolstered the argument that she's right on the cusp of returning to the US World's team as she dusted the strong NorCal field. With a nearly two minute margin over Sarah Kerlin just back from Belgium racing for the US - Josie Jacques-Maynes, and series leader Sarah Maile, Lloyd is ready to challenge all comers this weekend when she matches up with North American 'cross royalty including Katie Compton, Georgia Gould, Wendy Simms, Lyne Bessette and Alison Sydor. The Bay Area Super Prestige Series comes to it's 2007 conclusion December 9th at it's oldest locale - Coyote Point Park in San Mateo with it's photogenic ramble along the gravel beach, complete with winter high tides. 1st NCNCA CupNorthern California Cyclocross created a new regional series in 2007 the NCNCA Cup, presented by Sycip, that selected single events from all of the NorCal 'cross strongholds with the finale occuring in Golden Gate Park. With events from Fairfax, Sacramento, Monterey, and Santa Cruz attracting new participants, riders were introduced to the great variety of venues in the region that has produced so many National Champions. Once again the top two lineups dominated the Elite Men's standings but this time HRS-Rock Lobster and lime green jersies were in heaven as Josh Snead squeezed out a two point victory from David Wyandt to earn the very 1st NCNCA Cup. The 1st Women's victor was Rachel Lloyd in another runaway while one of the closest competitions developed in the Masters category with former National Champ James Coats securing the title over Gannon Myall with the bonus points offered at Golden Gate Park.
