Dutch Cyclo-cross Championships - CNWoerden, Netherlands, January 6-7, 20072006 Results Results Past winners Boom booms in cyclo-cross21 year-old beats the cyclo-cross vets at nationalsBy Brecht Decaluwé Talented Lars Boom continued his remarkable story in cycling with a national title with the elite men at the age of 21. The tall man from Vlijmen – 1.91m – asked and received dispensation from the KNWU to start with the elite riders in Woerden. Although he had a bad start, Boom did manage to beat his experienced teammates Gerben De Knegt and Richard Groenendaal. The first got away alone after a good start, the latter threatened Boom later on in the race. "This isn't too bad," said Boom after his win to NOS-TV, "although it was pretty hard. Especially after the start because I punctured twice during the first lap. Luckily I could recover well. I managed to come back on De Knegt together with Groenendaal and I decided to attack immediately. I really had to work hard in the end because Groenendaal finished strongly. " The fresh champion will now prepare for the world championships in Belgium where he'll start in the U23 category. His main rivals over there are Niels Albert (Palmans) and the current U23 world champion Zdenek Stybar (Fidea), who finished second behind Petr Dlask in the Czech elite race yesterday. "It's the last time I can have a go for that title, and I already came pretty close in the past," Boom said on NOS-TV. Gerben De Knegt had to give away his jersey but was honest with his reaction. "I battled for it, but in the end I have to admit that I wasn’t good enough… or Lars [Boom] was just too strong. The course wasn't my cup of tea but if you're good that doesn't matter," De Knegt said. On his weblog, he looks back on his year with the jersey. "I think I have been wearing the jersey with dignity so I look back on that time with a good feeling. I'm still fourth in the UCI-rankings and the season is not over yet, so I hope to score some more good results." De Knegt also talked about the future of his team mate Lars Boom. "I hope for the future of Dutch cyclo-cross that he'll compete throughout the season next year, otherwise we don't see the jersey much. On the other hand, I understand that he wants to see if he's one of the best on the road; we'll have to wait and see," De Knegt said. How it unfoldedGerben De Knegt had the best start with Camiel Van den Bergh (Stevens) and Maarten Nijland (Ruiter Dakkapellen) right behind him. De Knegt continued his efforts in front and had an early lead of 16 seconds on Nijland who led the first group while Lars Boom punctured twice during the first lap. Eventually Boom and Groenendaal took over command behind De Knegt and tried to come back on their teammate. Ronald Mutsaars (ZZPR) crashed hard on a steep descent but could finish the race. Boom bridged the gap on De Knegt on his own and immediately attacked him when he made a mistake. Lap after lap, Boom worked his advantage until Groenendaal overtook De Knegt. Groenendaal started a ultimate chase on his teammate, fourteen years younger, and the gap decreased steadily. Boom eventually withstood the challenge from Groenendaal and grabbed his first national elite title in front of Groenendaal and De Knegt; so it was an all Rabobank podium in Woerden. Maarten Nijland couldn't offer his new team a medal with his fourth place while Camiel Van den Bergh completed the top five.
