Jeremy Powers one step ahead

"I expected White, Frattini and I to get away together early," Powers said. "I live with Matt and I know how well he has been riding. So at the start I spent some time watching Davide and Matt put in a few good attacks. I tried to keep my distance and see how they were going to race."
White provoked the split with his blazing start, very similar to his winning performance last weekend. "The first couple of turns were hectic and it took a while to sort out the guys who were going to be on the podium. Half way through the first lap I went to blow things apart a little bit and Davide and Jeremy came with me - they were the group that I wanted to race with."
The trio began a series of attacks with four laps to go resulting in a perfect set up for Powers’ winning move. "Matt jumped, then I jumped and when it was Jeremy’s turn to jump next," Frattini said. "He came out of the technical section with a couple of bike lengths and just kept going. His jump was strong and he was able to keep a high speed for a few full laps. I tried to follow him but if I kept going it would have been really easy for me to have a heart attack. He was really strong today, one level above where I am at now and he just rode away - he deserved to win."
Powers managed a couple of party tricks for his fans in bunny hopping the tall, double barriers on the final lap through the start finish area. Fun and game aside, Powers is focusing his energy on the national championships near his hometown. "I was off racing in Boulder and have tried to keep my training consistent," Powers said. "The altitude was really difficult for me at five thousand feet. But, the U.S Grand Prix’s are super important to me and my real goal is December in Providence, only forty-five minutes from my house with all my family watching. It is important for me to build my UCI points here and these races are great for training."
The two-up sprint for second place ended in Frattini’s favour after a tactical stare down with White. "Matt and I knew there was no way to catch Jeremy so we prepared the sprint. We slowed down a lot in the last two laps. I was ahead coming to the finish we were looking at each other and sprinted. I hit the pavement first and jumped from there. I have improved a lot in the sprint this past year."

Riders Dan Timmerman (Fiordifrutta), Luca Damiani (FIDIBC) and Matt Kraus (Alan Factory) arguably displayed the most aggressive performances in their pursuit to reduce their lost time to the lead group. The events attraction, Chris Horner (Specialized), followed close behind to pick up seventh place. "I want to gain a little more experience," Horner said. "This is my third weekend of cyclo-cross racing this year plus the four races I did last year, for my career. Cyclo-cross is definitely fun and it is easy active down time for me. I prefer to keep riding through October and November before taking some time off in December."
Horner admits that the level of cross racing is a level above him at the moment. "The competition of cyclo-cross in the states is great with a lot of full time riders," Horner said. "I plan to do twelve UCI events this season with Specialized doing a great job supporting the races expenses for me. I would love to improve on my performance at nationals this year. When I first started cyclo-cross I had goals to keep training really hard and do the whole professional life up until nationals. But, I realized that when I got home to Bend I hadn’t been there for close to ten months and I had a lot of things to do; to spend time with my kids, the dogs and I moved into a new house as well."
The Lower Allan Classic Cyclo-cross was a success in more ways than one. The event has been holding an annual fundraiser helping various aspects of the surrounding community. "This year we racked up five-hundred dollars in cash as well as a boat load of food for a Bethesda Mission Homeless Shelter in Harrisburg," event promoter Mike Hebe said. "In addition, Chris Horner was our marquee named rider today and we had a great turn out of riders for the men’s field that included Jeremy Powers. But, we also had five other riders that have earned UCI wins. I am happy with the turn out today."
Winfield powers away from Bruno Roy

Deirdre Winfield (Velo Bella-Kona) rode away from her closest competition, Maureen Bruno Roy (Independent Fabrication), and soloed in for her win. Separations amongst the top riders in the field became larger as the race progressed. Bruno Roy limited her losses to approximately twenty seconds for second place and powerhouse Mandy Lozano one minute and half after that.
"The time differences in a regional race appear to be bigger than they are," Bruno Roy said. "At a national level there would have been six other riders between our fifteen-second gap. You don’t see such big gaps through out the national level race because the race is much tighter."
The time gaps increased early on as Bruno Roy blasted out of the start leaving Winfield to catch up. "I have been working on my starts for the past couple of years and I have found it to be really effective. The girls that usually finish ahead of me in the Grand Prix series have even faster starts, so that is what I have had to work on to be in the top five a the national level."
Winfield made catching up look effortless with her smooth pedaling over the long straight sections scattered throughout the circuit. " The start was really fast and there was a bit of an obstacle on the first lap with some tape left up on part of the course," Winfield said. "I caught up and Maureen and we did a lap or two together passing each other back and forth. She is really smooth in the technical sections and it was good for me to stay on her wheel and follow her lines. After that I just had to try and get by her, which was really tough."
Winfield and Bruno Roy showed strengths in opposite sections of the circuit with Bruno Roy excelling in the technical areas and Winfield in the powerful flat areas. Together the two riders increased their gap over the remaining field. "I knew I could get away from her on the straight sections and the road up to the start/finish," Winfield said. "I tried to do as much as I could in these sections to gain time on her but she is just such a great rider."
Winfield managed to escape Bruno Roy at her moment of weakness. "Deidre is definitely stronger than me in the flat, powerful pedaling sections so I tried to stay in front of her through the technical sections and had her come around me in the powerful parts," Bruno Roy said. "She looked back at me on the flat section before the final turns to the finish and saw I was hurting a little. She gave it a little more gas and I couldn’t hold on to her wheel. I prefer a more technical race with more twists and turns, mud or wet. The corners today were really slick and so today’s race required more concentration and thought. The course was really fun today."
Rebecca Wellans (Gearworks) and Mandy Lozano entered the final three laps in a battle for third place. Lozano stepped up her game with two laps to go, attacking Wellans over the barriers. "I was a turtle at the start but Maureen and Deidre are really fast starters," Lozano said. "I tend to be a slower starter and burn hot at the end. I definitely felt better at the end of the race."
"I was a little faster over the barriers than Rebecca and that is where I managed to get a bit of a gap on her. I was really comfortable with the section after the barriers and I was lucky to hold the gap after that."
Almost identical fields for both elite men and women will start the Verge MAC series event #5 held in Jamesburg, New Jersey on Sunday.
