Michelob ULTRA Gran Prix of Gloucester # 1 - C2(Crank Bros USGP #3)Gloucester, MA, USA, October 29, 20052004 Results Results Past winners Bessette and Johnson take Gloucester in epic blizzardBy Steve Medcroft U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross racers were taken by surprise during the third stop on the USGP series on Saturday (in Gloucester, Massachaussetts) when snow started to fall at the beginning of the day. Weekend weather predictions had called for mild temperatures and the possibility of rain but a blizzard turned what could have been a nice ride into a death march. Riders in shorts and thin gloves became sodden and frozen in the slushy downpour. The usually fast power course at Gloucester 's Stage Fort Park became a rutted, muddy and chaotic test of technical handling and will to survive. The only riders with any advantage in the race were the pair of solo winners; who were able to sit off the front and out of danger for most of their individual races. Those riders? Husband and wife Louis Garneau/cyclocrossworld.com teammates Lyne Bessette and Tim Johnson. Bessette's solo win comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed American cyclocross this season; she had won all six races she'd entered in 2005 so far. And even though she seems to be having an easy go of every race, Bessette doesn't see herself as a technical rider and says she was nervous about the conditions in Gloucester. “I got the hole shot but crashed in the first corner,” she said after the race. The fall allowed key contenders Barbara Howe (Velo Bella), Georgia Gould and Wendy Simms (both Kona) slip ahead. Howe says sitting in the lead group right from the first lap was an unusual feeling. “Normally I'm like 20 th or something. So I thought I had a good start because I was up near the front going into the dirt.” Bessette found her footing quickly though and pulled her way back into the lead; a lead she would hold until the finish. “I was fourth through the whole first lap but I knew the course was actually hard and I had been thinking that if there were other people in front of me and they crashed, I would get slowed down and somebody strong could go ahead so I wanted to make sure I was the one in front.” Howe, who chased Bessette for much of the race with Simms and Gould, says the race was defined as much by the elements as the competition. “I just kept pedaling as hard as I could but my hands were numb, I had to look to make sure I was shifting and stopping was just crazy.” Bessette also listed the conditions as a primary challenge. “My hands were so cold that on the last lap, into one of the final turns, I almost went straight because I couldn't brake and I could barely turn my bike any more. As soon as I crossed the line I noticed that I couldn't feel my hands at all. I ran into the motorhome and I was crying because my fingers were killing me.” With only fifteen minutes between the finish of the women's race and the start of the men's race, Bessette wouldn't have had enough time to offer her husband any advice on how to manage the brutal conditions but somehow, though luck and skill, Johnson found himself in the prime spot after only one corner in the men's race; off the front. “I heard someone say ‘there's chaos, there's chaos,” Johnson said after the race. The chaos was collapse of momentum that ensued when the hundred-rider strong men's field tangled in the first very first transition between pavement and dirt. “So I tried to keep my head down and watch where I was going after that.” Stuck in traffic behind Johnson were top USGP contenders Barry Wicks (USGP series leader entering Saturday's race) and Ryan Trebon. (both Kona). Trebon pulled out of the race after twenty minutes with mechanical problems. Wicks battled his way into a chase group that included Troy Wells (TIAA-Cref), former Junior World Champion Matt Kelly (Trek/VW), U23 National Champion Jesse Anthony (ClifBar) and Erik Tonkin (Kona). The group, mired in the technical sections of the course, was never able to reel Johnson back though and by three laps to go 2000 Cyclocross National Champion Johnson had almost two minutes over second place. The story of the race from there came from former USGP race winner and U.S. NORBA National Short Track Champion Adam Craig (Giant). Craig started the day buried deep in the middle of the huge pack. He spent the first thirty minutes bogged in traffic but made it onto the back on the chase group with several laps still to go. He appeared to then settle into a rhythm because he pulled though the entire group to finish second to Johnson, ten seconds ahead of Wells and a half minute ahead of the rest of the original chase group. Johnson's may owe his advantage over the predominantly younger chase group to his ability to game plan technical details based on previous experience in bad weather. “I've always had good luck in snow so I tried to focus before the race on what kind of tire pressure and what kind of laps times I wanted to do, what kind of lines I wanted to take and the technique I could use.” After racing in the horrific conditions, both winners had something different to say about the weather. Bessette yearns for a better day. “It's supposed to be sixty-five and sunny tomorrow,” she says. “I hope they're right.” Johnson, looking ahead to December's U.S. National Cyclocross Championship just down the highway in Providence, Rhode Island, says he welcomes a day like today. “I don't know what the weather will be for Providence but I hope it snows.” PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Steve Medcroft/Cyclingnews.com
