Surf City Cyclocross/Crank Bros USGP #5 - C1Watsonville, CA, USA, November 19, 2005Bessette clinches USGP series win, Wicks takes the day at Surf CityBy Paul McKenzie In uncharacteristically hot, dry conditions - even for Northern California - Lyne Bessette (Cyclocrossword.com-Louis Garneau) clinched the USGP of Cyclocross series title with her fifth straight win, while Barry Wicks (Kona) took out the men's race. Wicks' Surf City win puts him in a good position for a chance to take the overall series win. In the women's elite race, Bessette led the entire race and never looked back, creating a gap from the beginning. Mid way through the race, Wendy Simms (Kona) looked as though she might have the punch to close the gap on the runaway series leader, but in the end she was unable to do so. Further back, a battle ensued between Georgia Gould (Kona), Christine Vardaros and Melissa Thomas (Tokyo Joe's). The three battled for several laps but Gould was finally able to get away for the third and final spot on the podium. Newcomer Gould, commenting on her podium finish noted, "I'm really happy, I had no idea!" The men's elite race was not unlike the women's race in that the winner led from the gun. Barry Wicks (Kona) charged out hard, leaving his competition to battle for the other two podium spots. Mark McCormack (Clif Bar), Todd Wells (GT-Hyundai), Tim Johnson (Cyclocrossworld.com-Louis Garneau), and Carl Decker (Giant) battled for the entire race. McCormack held second place early, but a hard charging Wells eventually caught McCormack, sat on his wheel for a spell, then attacked and got away. Johnson chased, and at one point bridged to the McCormack/Wells duo but then seemed to wilt in the heat toward the end. Late in the race, he was passed by Carl Decker. Wicks stayed away for the win, Wells took second, and McCormack was third. Johnson finished fifth but moved into the overall series lead. McCormack noted after the race that, "The race started fast as I thought it would. Barry Wicks took the lead from the end of the start stretch until the finish." When asked about the heat, McCormack replied, "Like any race, everyone is in the same exact element, so there's no advantage or disadvantage. But it was just as hard as racing in freezing temperatures and snow." Former series leader Ryan Trebon is racing in Europe and Adam Craig, who was in third place in the series prior to today, is also racing overseas in South Africa. Both Trebon and Craig have thus given up any chance of a series victory. Chris Horner (Saunier Duval-Prodir) also participated and finished a respectable 13th. He plans to do even better in San Francisco. The 2005 Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross concludes November 20 in San Francisco California.
