Boulder Cyclocross Series

Dakota Ridge, CO, November 12, 2005

Strong winds greeted Front Range cyclo-crossers in Littleton on Saturday at the Dakota Ridge venue. The Elite Men's race had all the makings of epic battle as TIAA CREF and Primus Mootry had strong teams ready to take on the small but mighty Voodoo squad out of Colorado Springs. Last years Foothills series winner, and full time Carmichael Training Systems coach Jason Tullous seemed poised for a great ride in conditions that suited his compact and powerful style. At the start the field of 26 went ballistic.

A lead group of eight riders came back through the start area after the first of 7 laps taking place over a blazingly fast hour of racing. Just two laps in, Tullous attacked with fury, and even though it was early in the race, he was one of the few riders that had the chops to make his move stick. The wind continued to gust at well over 30 miles an hour and the harsh conditions blew the race wide open. One of the most consistent riders in Colorado this year, Brandon Dwight, was one of the few riders able to stay with in 15 seconds of the charging Tullous. The team that has shown an amazing amount of depth for 2005, Primus Mootry, had two riders missing but still had enough fire power to call on Doug Campbell to head up the charge this week. Campbell worked with Dwight to real in standout Tullous, but to no avail. The man who drilled it with 40 minutes to go not only hung on, but Jason Tullous left more than one person asking is if we might be watching the next big thing ride by.

With last week's winner Katie Compton electing to fine tune her form for the national championships by racing with the men (she ended up finishing in the top 5 of the "B" race), the women's race saw some new faces at the front on Saturday. Two of Boulders brightest stars; Gretchen Reeves and Heather Irminger animated the race right off the start line. It took less than a lap for it to turn into a battle between these two heavy hitters.

Reeves and newly wed Irminger took the early lead and never looked back. Reeve's (current NORBA Marathon National Champion on the mountain bike) swapped pulls along with 2005 NORBA cross country winner Irminger. When Reeves dropping her chain while in the lead on lap 3, Irminger asserted herself and briefly held on to the race lead. The rough course caused mechanical problems for many of the competitors today. Reeves showed her class, staying calm while fixing her bike. Once back up to speed, she reeled in Irminger and then set about to dispatching her with two laps remaining. At the finish it was Reeve's soloing in for the win, with Irminger following 20 seconds later.
