The Cycle-Smart International - C1Northampton, MA, USA, November 13, 20052004 Results Results Past winners McCormack, Bessette shine the brightest in NorthamptonA beautiful day in central Massachusetts greeted over 400 riders as Mark McCormack (Clif Bar) and Lynn Bessette (Louis Garneau/Cyclocrossworld.com) took the elite top honors at the 15th Annual Cycle-Smart Invitational, Round #3 of the 2005 Verge New England Championship Cyclo-cross Series. Canadian national champion and series leader Bessette was coming off her 11th win in as many tries this season and early on it looked clear that mark would go up to 12-for-12. After erasing a small gap courtesy of hole-shot earner Maureen Bruno-Roy (Independent Fabrications) in the first half-lap, Bessette cranked the power and just rode away from everyone in the field. The race behind her was the story of the show, as Oregon native Rhonda Mazza (S&M/Vanilla) drove the pace for almost an entire lap with a group containing Bruno-Roy, Tara Ross (Victory Brewing), and Mackenzie Dickey (Team Bike Alley). Eventually only Ross could stay with the Oregonian, and those two would then start a 30-minute duel right to the end of the race. With Mazza pulling most of the time, some wondered whether Ross was hanging on by a thread or trying to set up Mazza for the finish. But any doubt was erased when Mazza put out a terrific sprint on the pavement to secure a well-deserved 2nd place finish. Bruno-Roy tried several times to get back to the dueling duo but just didn't have enough speed to catch up, settling for 4th place. Dickey meanwhile had her hands full with a charging Amy Wallace (Verizon Wireless), but Wallace had no answer for one of the best sprinters in the women's peloton and Dickey held on for 5th on the day. McCormack came in to Sunday's race with nothing short of the win on his mind, as a mechanical problem led to an unsatisfying 6th place finish the day before and a loss of the series leadership. Motivating him even more was the appearance of friendly rival Todd Wells (GT/Hyundai), who was starting his '05/'06 UCI campaign at this weekend's events. The strong field took off and the hole shot was garnered by U23 national champion Jesse Anthony (Clif Bar), with a group containing Jon Baker (Primus Mootry), Michael Cody (FiordiFrutta), McCormack, Wells, new series leader Tim Johnson (Louis Garneau/Cyclocrossworld.com), Matt White (FiordiFrutta), and Matt Kraus (Alan) right on his tail. But McCormack's determination was evident as he rode the second of 2 run-up with ease and even got a 2-bikelength gap on the group after doing so. Wells recognized the danger early and made his move to chase down McCormack, splitting the first group as Baker also bridged up. The 2nd time up the ridable run-up nearly proved disastrous again as Wells got tangled up with McCormack and McCormack had to slow down to prevent his chain from coming off. McCormack recovered, but meanwhile the lead 3 had to deal with a chase being trucked in courtesy of Johnson, who had White and Eric Tonkin (Kona) with him. Once the lead group of 6 was back together, McCormack started to put on the pressure and only the fresh Wells was able to keep up with his efforts with 3 laps to go. Johnson and White formed a second group while Tonkin and Baker formed a third group ahead of a struggling Anthony and Cody. The crowd's anticipation grew as the friendly foes dueled throughout the entire course, exciting the fans and setting the stage for a second straight sprint finish for the win. The duo tried to separate themselves, but it was not meant to be and once on the tarmac for the final time, McCormack kicked it in one final time and outsprinted Wells to successfully defend his CSI championship. Meanwhile, Johnson needed a 3rd place finish to retain his series lead, and he did just that by dropping a game White and taking the final podium spot uncontested. White secured 4th spot and Tonkin rounded out the top 5. The series continues in 2 weeks as the country's best riders will try to ride off their turkey dinners in Sterling, Massachusetts and the 2005 Gearworks Bay State Cyclocross on Saturday, November 26th.
